Err.. that was an 8 hour cut, not 14. Actually the original rough cut was 20 hours! The final release was 160 minutes with a 'European' cut extending out to 180 minutes. However, a 280 minute Director's cut was released on DVD and shown in select theatres years after the original release.

BTW, I believe it was Reel 2 Day 2 (i.e. the second reel of film used on day 2 of filming) - the first time Artoo featured in a scene.

Spike Milligan was visiting war graves I think while writing his war books during Life of Brian.

In anticipation of that being right - Two separate actors played this famous comedy role, one in the film and one in the spin-off tv series. They died within 24 hours of each other of the same cause, a heart attack. What was that role?

Your question is driving me mad because I know I know it but I can't think of it! I thought at first it might be Walter Matthau/Jack Klugman but the latter is still alive. Hmmm.
 
It's not day, it's dialogue.

George Lucas came up with the name R2-D2 during post-production of American Graffiti (1973). One of the sound crew wanted Lucas to retrieve Reel #2 of the Second Dialogue track. In post-production parlance, this came out as "could you get R2-D2 for me?". Lucas liked the sound of that and noted it down for future use.
