"We're going to protest oil by running around with a plastic tarp made from oil products!!!!"

Sure, they can complain about whoever they want that destroys the environment, the main point being that they are hurting the environment, suggesting that these people actually care about the environment to a point they are willing to take action to protect it. Theoretically of course.

Oil does rise from the oceans, regularly. They're not lending a hand though, because nature takes care of itself. Sure they can be mad at BP, but surely there's a time and place for everything, and what's more important right now, saving the earth and cleaning up the mess, or being mad at BP? What's more pressing?

If they were true to their ideals in saving the environment, which causes them to be mad at companies that hurt the environment in the first place, why wouldn't they act on those ideals?

Yes, it is a starwman.

It's not obtuse. They spend time and resources in an effort to limit pollution in the way they think is the best and most effective.

You're saying well they want to limit pollution.... so why don't they spend money to clean up the waste and pollution of a company. As if that solves the problem of pollution. If anything that makes pollution easier. Which isn't their goal.

I can understand not wanting to pay for government measures. I would encourage the people to seek private methods or to increase gov't penalties for illegal pollution.

What you're suggesting is a strawman of their position.

The funny thing about this situation is that most of these people complaining are probably part owners of BP.

I understand what you're saying.

I'm saying that I find that method reprehensible. I'm saying that in my mind it demonstrates a lack of comittment and goals beyond what they publicly admit to. I'm saying that I'm saying that most people that I know are not interested in "Do as I say, not as I do.", and that seems to be the operating stance of most environmental groups.

It's not a strawman to request that environmental groups move beyond a stance that is both generally ineffective with a four-year-old AND irritating to it's target audience.
