Mountain bike for a heavy guy?

You don't want to buy a bike from Walmart or anny other department store it wont hold up. Check out the local ebay and craig's list for a good used shop quality bike. Take it to the local bike shop and have them tension the spokes. Take his inseam X .59 to get the proper frame size.

My dad would like a bike for Christmas, but he's a heavy guy - maybe 5'11 & 345 pounds. He's not interested in serious cycling or anything like that, maybe just riding the bike around the neighborhood every evening. He is looking to spend $250 max. I've read that we should be looking at steel frames & 26 spoke wheels. Can anyone suggest a few good bikes I can look at online? We're not sure if we will make the purchase online or in a store, but I'm willing to purchase from Walmart, Target, Dick's Sporting Goods, Amazon, and Overstock websites.
**edit: 36 spoke wheels
