i have the same phone sometimes it will take a while to connect but the call always goes through

I recently called a friend multiple times. They said their phone never rang. I call and wait a few seconds, it gives me a ringtone when it's trying to connect, and then it goes straight to their voice mail. It's happened when i try to call another friend. Is this My phone or is it just a coincidence. If it is my phone how can I fix it?
