Motorola Hint QA 30 crashes when connecting for Internet and MMS.

Hi,

I recently purchased a Motorola Hint QA. I really like the phone especially since it's actually a 3G phone. However, I have one major problem: When I am in areas without 3G (the display says 1X instead of EV) the phone crashes and reboots every time it tries to connect to send/receive MMS or when I try to connect the browser or e-mail client. It's really bad when I am traveling and someone senRAB me a MMS. It renders the phone useless since the picture message gets sent over and over so the phone reboots constantly. It comes back up, reception starts, *boom* gone!

It will be hard to reproduce this when I take it in to the Cricket store since I have 3G connection there and everything works fine.

Has anyone else experienced this problem with this phone (or any other Circket phone for that matter)? It would make me feel better if this is a known problem and not only me experiencing it. I do not expect anyone to have a solution since this obviously has to do with how the network interacts with the firmware on the phone. But if someone has ideas on what I can do, please post them here! :)

This weekend when I was out and about and roaming, it did the same thing to me, a few times, and my fiancee, soo....

Also it does not work with the voyager pro heaRABet, it pairs, but does not transmit or receive sound.

Other then that, great phone still, works great in native cricket markets, just wants to reboot when roaming or in non-native cricket areas.

Oh well, it isn't only me then! :) However, it neeRAB this to work in the future since I travel a lot. I have no problems with coverage where I travel, so if this problem could be fixed I will be a happy "Crickteer" again! :)

My fiancee was quite unhappy about it, she is one of those people where it either works or it gets replaced, so needless to say I am trying to resell her on cricket, but....... I think she will end up replacing it with another phone from another carrier with it. Soo this problem will end up costing me about a extra 30 a month.

I had a Samsung Messager which worked flawlessly, so I think I will go back to that if Cricket doesn't fix it soon. Don't you think Cricket will take your Hint back considering that it doesn't work like it should?

No they will not take it back.

It is not a bad phone, my messager and jetset also reboot for no reason, so I am not holding it against the hint.. It is a great phone in a cricket coverage area. I still prefer how much better the hint is with mms than the messager or even the jetset.

My mother has a Samsung Messager which was shutting of randomly and when we removed the back cover we could see where the battery had been sliding around, it was obvious. I got her to double fold a business card and put it between the back cover and the battery, and it has not done so since. I read I think in the metro forums after they first got the Hint that they were doing the same thing with the Hints with good success. The Hints would still reboot when they got too many messages, etc but not just the absolutely random rebooting.

Hope this helped

I roam on Verizon when I travel and so far I haven't run into this issue with my Hint. Hopefully a firmware update will fix it for you guys. I love the phone.

I was in San Diego yesterday and didn't have problems there. However, today I'm in San Jose and it keeps dying on me every time a MMS is trying to get through. Very annoying!

I just thought of something that you guys might want to try. One of the first things that I did when I got my phone was to go into in the Messaging settings and set "Auto Receive" to Off. I still receive MMS message notifications, but I have to choose to download them.

I think that this might solve your problem with the reboots because the phone won't be attempting to make a data connection immediately when an MMS is received. It also would explain why I haven't experienced this problem while roaming where data services are not available.

Give it a shot, and let me know if it helps.

Good call.. yeah I think the phone thinks that if it isn't roaming then it will have a data connection and when it does not, it goes umm not sure what to do lets reboot..

Cool, thanks woof!

My fiancee said that when she was in long beach, that she would get a alert to download a mms message and that is when it would reboot.. So same thing.. Me in San Diego, I think that was a fluke, since I had like 5 alerts about having e-mail, but I was in a cricket area...

See if they can figure out how I can use the plantronics voyager pro heaRABet to :)..

Thanks for everything man!

I just want to confirm that I am seeing the exact same here in San Jose where I am until tomorrow. At home in Austin, TX I do not have the problem.

Thanks woof for looking into this. I had decided to take the phone back to the store on Thursday. Now I will wait and see if a fix is found.

This looks to be a hanRABet specific issue on the hint. You should take the phone to a corporate location and advise them of the issue. They should open a ticket to get this resolved.

It's not a network issue.

I've seen people with Hint's on AllTel who doesn't have this problem. Might be because they haven't tried to use data while roaming or they are not not 3G. My Hint works fine as long as the display says "EV", but as soon as it says "1X" I'm in trouble.

As I said above it's a software issue. Alltel doesnt have the same software on their phones as Cricket so the lack of a problem on Alltel hint's is logical.
