Motorola Droid 2 questions about how it works if it doesn't have a SIM card?

Hi

I'm thinking of buying my daughter this Motorola Droid 2, but it works with CDMA technology meaning it doesn't operate with a SIM card. I've never had a phone like this. I do NOT want a calling plan, i want pay as you go. Can you still do prepaid on one of these phones or is it mandatory to have a plan?
