Motorola Cliq actively uses the 3G connection?

I just bought my Motorola Cliq and I'm scared that it is using the internet because it have the word 3G on the top right of it so I'm scared that it is using it so yeah, I don't want my bill to go up and my mom yelling at me. Is there a way to turn it off? I'm not using those little status updates or anything to make it us the 3G hotspot thing.
 
Im pretty sure that its not. My old phone was the LG VU and I had no web access and it had the little 3G thing on all the time. I think that just means that you are using the 3G network. But IDK I'm pretty dumb when it comes to phone tech. Hope this helps! :)
