Moto v635 vs. Nokia 6131: Is there really $110 worth of difference?

After much research, and not really finding anything great being offered with the prepaid plans except the $250 RAZR V3, I went looking to see what I'd like and ended up with the Motorola v635. These can be had for about $160 on eBay right now in new unlocked condition.

I was basically going to get it off eBay and then get a Cingular prepaid plan SIM to put in it (thereby having a nice phone and no paying for minutes every month I don't think I'll use) when I saw the Nokia 6131 threads cropping up.

While the Nokia 6131 is about $110 more on eBay right now, I'm trying to determine if it's really all that much better than the Moto v635? Certainly it's newer, and the primary screen should be awesome since it supports 16.7 mil colors...but other than that, is it really that much better than the v635?

Here's the two compared side by side at PhoneScoop: v635 vs 6131

I think my answer is going to be for limited use, why spend that much on the 6131 even if it is better...I just want to do this once, not have keep doing it again and again...

Thanks for any perspective on this you can lend!!!!

The 6131 has two superior screens, its smaller, lighter, has auto open, most likely has better rf, more internal memory, Class 10 edge (compared to 4 on the V635), infrared, Fm radio and a MUCH better UI.

braindead5400- Out of all those improvements you've listed, I think the only ones that care about are the possibly better RF and maybe the FM radio...

...the more internal memory can be solved with an add-in memory card, EDGE I'll probably never use due to the cost, infared I'm not sure why I'd really need that with USB?, the UI I can live with as long as the regular basic things are easy to do...

...that leaves us with smaller, which I'm not sure is always better, auto-open which while cool isn't necessary, and the screens. Given that I won't be staring at this thing all day long and won't be using it all that much, I'm not sure if that's really a major selling point, although as a computer Geek, I can attest to the fact that 16.7 mil color capability is enticing me for no other reason that it's cool...

Given the above, you really think it's $110 more or not?

Honestly this is starting to sound like a judgement call I need to make myself...

I personally would get the 6131, but at the same time I'd appreciate what the 6131 offers over the V635 more than you would. If none of the features of the 6131 interest you, then there is no point in spending the extra money

I agree to all the points above made in favour of the 6131. Not sure if the lack of antena was mentioned

I've had both the v635 and 6131 (I still have it, but I'm selling it), and I must add that you'd feel more confident dropping the v635 on any surface. The way it's put together is just begging for abuse, accidental of course. I don't know how the 6131 would fare in this respect, and durability

braindead5400- I understand exactly what you're saying...I'd rather get the 6131 also, however as you point out, the features it has over the v635 I don't know would really matter to me - at least not $110 matter.

markj- I've never really navigated menu's in a cell phone before other than getting to the address book, so I don't have a reference point to compare confusing to. I sure wish I could see this screen and the v635 to see if it's really matter to me.

I guess $110 divided by even 12 months is only less than $10 a month...and I'd probably have this thing at least a year, more than likely more. I just wasn't wanting to drop near that much on a phone...too bad these aren't somewhat lower in price, or the shipping is realistic instead of $50...

Thanks for the continued guidance!!!

xtoronto- Sorry for not responding back earlier, I was typing my last reply while you posted...

As having both, can I get your opinion on quality of call, speaker clarity, camera quality, what the screens are like, etc?

I'm not looking for some monster long review, just how you see them as individual phones and maybe why you'd take one over the other...

Thanks a ton if you can do that!!!

I have owned both and for reception alone would select the 6131. My moto would not get any consistant reception at home, the Nokia has been rock solid.

Since you are on Cingular I would wait for the 6126. There are too many reports of VMI and MMS difficulties with the 6131 and Cingular. I have T-mo and have no difficulties, but for more information on that check into the official thread on Hofo.

I know some don't want branding or locking, but to get a fully functional phone IMO I would accept that.

as above poster noted, reception is superior.

in answer to your questions, I found the voice quality to be more natural in the 6131, sounding more like the person talked to. As for the sound of my voice I've had no feedback, good or bad.

camera wise, the 6131 again comes of top; the pictures are clearer, and I find thre's less lag. An obvious difference exists also in colour. While neither phone reproduces colours very well, the Nokia's are more vivid and hence prettier to look at, whereas the Moto's are just dull.

finally, I've also noticed that there's considerably less PULSATING BUZZ (1 2 3 - 1 2 3... pattern) produced whenever I'm around speakers in the case of the 6131.

thanks.

One thing you should know. Both phones require special cables to transfer data to the computer, if you are interested in a usb connection. You can get a cables from several sources, although the quality may vary. Both need special drivers, but Nokia gives their driver and sync package away for free while the moto package costs money.
As to my opinion on the phones, I much prefer Nokia over motorola. I have dealt with, and used, several brands, and Nokia is one of the best in many ways.
