Hey guys,

I have an ancient phone and looking to upgrade: important for me good voice quality but most importantly i'd like to be able to access the net. I can join any firm (rogers, fido etc..) any recommendation if the E398 can hanlde decent speed and is Rogers a good fit?

Thanks for your help

First, find a carrier that supports EDGE. Class 10 EDGE is the highest speed available on GSM networks, but you have to be up against the tower to see that. If you find a carrier that supports EDGE, get an EDGE capable phone (http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/finder.php) for faster data speeds.

The E398 is only GPRS capable. Tables 1 and 2 of this link (http://www.evaluationengineering.com/archive/articles/0202wireless.htm) give you a decent idea of the speed differences between GPRS and EDGE. Ignore the 8 time slot information. It's more hypothetical than real. If the networks are generous, they'll let you use up to 4 time slots when no one else is on.

Rogers (http://www.shoprogers.com/store/wireless/coverage/overview.asp?shopperID=3PQ5DTHQ07SP9P5HF3CS3G2HCMR71FMF) appears to have GSM/GPRS networks in Canada.

Fido (http://www.fido.ca/portal/en/domore/mobileinternet.shtml) claims to support EDGE. At 56kbps that tells me they let you use 1 time slot.

Good luck!
