Motivation for providing illegal movies?

Hi there. Over the past coulple of days there have been a number of people at my work talking about downloading new (and old) movies off the internet thanks to bit torrent etc.

This got me thinking, why do people put these movies on the web in the first place? As downloading them is free I can't see why somebody would feel the need to pay to go to a cinema with a hidden camera in order for other people (whome they don't know) to watch it for free.

Also, a similar question regarding people who buy a DVD, rip it to their computer and then distribute it on the net for other people to download for free.

Are these people getting paid for this or not? I don't understand what their motivation is for doing it at all.

Thanks.

p.s. didn't know if this should be in the computer section or movie section, apologies if I chose the wrong place. ;)

I assume the people that do the recording of the film in a cinema do it to sell DVD copies, im sure we have all seen people selling bags of these.
Then I guess that someone that buys a copy puts it on the net so others can watch it.

Maybe it's to do with the principle that you have to upload something to download something. If there's something you want, you need to offer something in exchange and ripping a CD or DVD involves no effort.

I think a lot of the uploaders see themselves as rebels who are sticking it to "The Man" by depriving him of his profits.
Ironically the regional coding provides the opportunity to put dvRAB on the net so people outside the region can see them for free before they're released officially.
The coding disappears as soon as the dvd is ripped.
Speaking purely selfishly, long may it continue :)

I object strongly for Indie/ low budget films, but less so for hollywood stuff.

E.G 'The football factory' it suffered a hell of alot thanks to piracy!

I'd like to bet that it is the biggest main factor for people who have never owned a PC to rush out and buy one. :)

There's very few of the younger generation who don't talk about it all the time. MP3's and the Ipod generation is only one step away from downloading their favourite movies when they get the hang of the different ways of doing it.

The next step is the parents seeing how cool it is and agreeing to switching from Dial Up to Broadband.

The rest is a steep learning curve, and one that will have them at the PC repair shop or calling a techie to get rid of all the viruses and other rubbish that they accumulate on their PCs. (These techies must get a right good laugh or roll their eyes in a 'here we go again' mode).

But from then on, they become ever more savvie and they will brag to their next door neighbours or anyone else that hasn't got a PC as to how they can get the latest this and that.....at a cost of nil.

I'm afraid that's techology for you..coupled with people who want bargains in life and everything they can get for nought. :)

What I cannot understand is how people can record a film in a cinema without being spotted. Unless you are the only one in the cinema I cant see how you can hold a camcorder or digital camera for two hours and not be obvious what you are doing.

If your parents think something's cool then you'll stop doing it at once. Maybe the film distributors should run an advert showing a couple of "cool" parents watching a pirated film whilst making out on a DFS leather sofa. Squeaks and squelches and all.

Many films are copied via cameras in countries where no one cares about it. These are most likely the ones sold by the Chinese blokes outside Tesco etc. :)
