Motion for physical appearance...pros and cons and what points to argue?

If you were suing a person (civil court), what would be the pros and cons of motioning that the defendant (who lives in a different city) appear in person for all hearings leading up to trial?

If you would be for it, what points would you argue to the judge in order to achieve this? Also keep in mind that the Defendant's attorney has already been granted the ability to appear via telephone for all pre-hearings, but not the Defendant himself.

Thank you.
Also if possible, please provide case law or legal rules that support the argument for the "rights" to in-person hearings.
