what age ? so at what age do you think it's ok for kids to have their own mobile ? like need it ? [assuming they don't go out alone or with friends an adult is always with them] ?
because suddenly i see around me ALL my relatives buy blackberries for their kids [from grade 4 !!] because their kids want to chat with friends 24/7
and the younger ones get nokia [cousin 5 years old]
i want opinions from people who are not in my society !! i couldn't care less but i find it a tad Ridiculous [ in family meetings u will see 15's and 12's and 11's all sitting slinetly talking to each other by bb]

i got my mobile when i was at high school and i dont care if it's the latest i just need one to make calls and i don't use it when im at home
oh and im 21 now and at college
exactly !! me too
i didn't need a phone at all even in high school, but my mother bought me one at HS because i will stay late for projects sometimes and needed to call her

It would be a big mistake to let them have one.
It is kind of known that technology is ruining the fabric of social interactions.

Also, having a Blackberry means that your children would become targets of mobile phone thieves.

Don't risk your child's life, just to appease them so that they can follow the crowd.

16 is about the right age, any time before that is asking for trouble. Kids loose phones, kids get beat up by other kids for their phones, and kids generally aren't responsible enough to manage tier own bills so they tend to send 5 billion text messages without considering the cost.

smart phones are even worse. At home you can put a net nanny on the computer to stop them from reading unsuitable websites, and you can supervise them to make sure that they aren't on Facebook 24/7, but with a smart phone they can dial into any website at any time without restriction or supervision.

I personally don't like blackberry phones, but I will admit to having already given my son a mobile phone (he is just shy of six months old). there is no sim card in it, but it does work- it's my old phone and I gave into temptation and purchased myself a pretty new phone. I gave Alex my old phone as a beepy chew toy to be honest!

I got my first phone at eighteen- mum was at her wits end as to what to get me for christmas so purchased a phone for me. I don't really use the phone I've got for making calls- I had to go pre paid because I don't use it enough to warrant a plan!

Teens don't need blackberries. They're expensive to buy and operate - and who the heck do they need to be emailing on the go?? It's not like they have urgent business to attend to.

Our kids are 7, 5, and 10 months.. and they aren't getting a mobile phone anytime soon. I think when our oldest is 10 or so he will have a pay-as-you-go phone to call me when he is out with friends in the neighborhood.

Mobile phones didn't exist when I was a teen and I got by just fine.
