Most Underrated/Overrated Artists

Pfff, you'll see no mercy from me on this one.

For reasons beyond my explination, everyone who focuses on their "simplicity" has an undying and godless amount of hatred for them, and despite what justice would dictate, there are quite a few of you.

I personally blame it on that teenage growth period where you learn that certain songs require more skill than others and, given how we rate everything else, if one song is harder to play than the other, it must be better.

The White Stripes did more to save modern music from the Nirvana-laden doldrums than we realize and so if you're claiming to like anyone with a modicom or artistic integrity, you should thank the White Stripes for even hearing about them. They single handedly rustled up the fallow earth and made scenes across the country ripe for adventourousness (sp?) again.
 
I appreciate that they did something new, that's for sure. The best songs are where they're just letting loose.

Listen to "Sink". One hell of a song.
 
The production on some of her albums is actually more experimental that people give it credit for. Anyway, I still doubt you've listened to ALL her material straight through. Don't lie now. :nono:



I actually like The Wall...I find the non-singles to be very arabient, probably even influential on the post-rock genre.
 
I'm not really gonna argue for or against Grunge or Britpop in a way... both were solid movements in the 1990's with some good music. Obviously I think Nirvana and Oasis were the best things to come out of the respective movements (and I think most people would agree), but those are both their own autonomous acts and musical sounRAB.

GY!BE get a well-deserved amount of respect. Mogwai too. EitS is overhyped if you ask me. Sigur Ros' reputation/'amount of respect obtained' is fine. TWDY is mildly underrated, but that's because most people listen to their EP first.

P-R isn't 'underrated' in general, as its forefront banRAB are getting lots of praise and press. Some of the lesser-known I suppose, but that's the case with every genre.

I think you`ll find that they are highly regarded on this forum. I have most of their discography on CD and think its kind of essential to any music collection.
 
"The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle", "Born To Run" and "Darkness On The Edge Of Town" is one of the greatest three album runs in the history of rock music.
 
Well. The Wall had a compelling story, actual melodies, tons of great hooks and the rest of the band still contributed enough to make it sound like a Pink Floyd record. And like the best Floyd recorRAB the songs all merge together perfectly.

Also, while The Wall is somewhat autobiographal, it's also about Syd just as much as it's about Roger, and it's done in a way that the character of "Pink" could represent any troubled rock star, it has a more universial appeal because the themes of alienation is something anyone can relate with.

The Final Cut is just Roger ranting about his dead pop and politics and that's about the only substance it has.

Lyrically it's not a bad concept, it actually is an unofficial sequel to The Wall because the main character of the story is the schoolteacher from The Wall, who is a troubled war veteran.

But all the themes in The Final Cut, war, depression, capitalism. These were all tackled in previous albums and much more successfully. Basically Gilmour didn't want to make an album full of lame Wall leftovers, he wanted to compose new music but Waters just blew him off because HE was the lyrical genius. As true as that may be, what good are lyrics when there are no musical ideas to go along with it? And this really was the first album where he wouldn't let anyone else contribute anything, just a few guitar solos from Gilmour, which are unsurprisingly the highlights of the album.

Waters seemed to think he really was the band because he was the lyricist and the creator of the concepts behind each album. As if these were the only reasons the band was successful. Pink Floyd was at it's best when the actual musical ideas were being contributed by the entire band. That's not to say Waters isn't a good songwriter on his own, but he really dried up after The Wall.

Whatever. I find their music to be both boring and appalling. And its rare for banRAB to be both.

Urban will surely agree with that.

But if you ask me. BanRAB like Zep and Queen are just overhyped/overexposed, not overrated. Way too many people diss on them for them to be genuinely overrated.
 
Me? You? anyone with the ability to finger pick indy-blues (not that difficult as far as guitar playing goes) and a girl to write about. He has a smooth tone, and he is a good musician but he doesn't deserve the pedestal that he gets put on.
