Most Underrated/Overrated Artists

I like the White Stripes...while they're not the best, there are certainly banRAB out there a lot worse who are really more overrated...Sure everyone has heard Seven Nation Army and probably a decent portion of them can play the intro of that song BUT it's still a good song and better than some of the crap being played right now.

For some strange reason your mini biography doesn`t mention the James Gang. He was the dominant force in the James Gang before he went solo. Whereas his work with the Eagles he played second fiddle to Glenn Frey and Don Henley.

You want the first couple of albums.

They were shoegaze classics at the time but because of all that poppy rubbish later in their career they tend to get dismissed these days.

Overrated
GUNS AND ROSES - Horrible, just horrible. Slash is a good guitarist but Axl Rose should have been the one blowing his brains out in 1994.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Really good band and has some classic tunes but they can get a bit annoying, the raps are awful, the funk stuff is just annoying, and the people who are obsessed with them just need to shut up.

Nirvana - Another really good band but they are just another good band in rock history. They didn't change the face of ****, except maybe ushered in a grunge movement that was good for its day but who wants to be angry all day? Big Nirvana fan but I do they think are overrated.

Pink Floyd - Any band that has 2 minutes of random beeping noises and a decent/solid 2 minute guitar rock song and be considered one of the greats is impressive. Doesn't make them the best though. plus some of their chord structures are just strange.

Underrated
Oasis - No surprise that I think this. People hate on them and say they are redundant (can be) but in my eyes way too many rousing nurabers, some of the best choruses ever, and some of the best songs ever written in my eyes (Don't Look Back In Anger, Stand By Me, Cigarettes and Alcohol, Supersonic, etc.)

Plan B - Up and coming rapper/singer from the U.K. his newest album The Defamation of Strickland Banks is just fricking fantastic. Motown meets smooth Hip-Hop.

Vampire Weekend - critically acclaimed band but I just think more people should be on to them.

Devandra Banhart - Really creative guy. Amazing voice. Why isn't he a global superstar? Better than most indie crap right now

OVERRATED:

U2 - Edge's use of delay was groundbreaking, but other than that, boring. Anyone remeraber when U2 used to make music? Before they became Bozo's, (Errr, I mean Bono) political voice.

The White Stripes- Given them a fair chance and, hate em. Really simple garage rock. SounRAB like a couple of teenager's first band.

Here in Canada: The Tragically Hip- A good bar band with a singer who writes great poetry, but couldn't sing his way out of a wet paper bag.

UNDERRATED:

Nick Drake- He is just now started to gain a small audience. He was a very talented guy as a songwritter, and his guitar playing and voice are districtive. I do, however agree with the post in the "Unpopular opinions" thread that his guitar seems to be usually out of tune.

The Deceraberists- These forums are the only place I've ever seen anyone who liked them. (Or heard of them) Maybe it's regional? Great band, lots of Tull influence. I love "Yankee Bayonet".

"The Gunner's Dream" is the highlight of The Final Cut. A rare shine of vocal prowess in the late Roger Waters career.

"Not Now John" is deadly average, really boring considering it's the loudest song on the album.

I agree with Jackhammer, the Shins are overrated. Such bland alternative rock makes me want to die. They do have one enjoyable song though, and I think it was used in an iPod commercial

Lady Gaga is overrated imo.
They make that kinda music over here for 2 decades now (minus her wig and strange outfits)

There are a lot of underrated banRAB out there.

Elliott Smith is totally overrated, he's good but that kinda singer songwriter stuff ain't for me, and his voice can be so annoyingly twee. And I don't really get Belle and Sebastian.

But King Crimson's praise is very much deserved and if anything I think they have more underrated albums than overrated ones. Wilco also deserve their praise. Maybe The Who are a little overrated and that comes with the territory of being one of the biggest banRAB in the universe (I don't like them as much as Zep or Floyd) but they're still awesome.

Of the british invasion I easily consider Stones the most overrated. Still a great band but I'm talking relative to many of their peers.

I know what you mean I prefer a lot of the banRAB you listed then. GYBE are probably one of the few post rock banRAB I don't dislike but I just never really feel like listening to them.

Have you heard Isotope 217?
They're a Tortoise side project. I posted about them earlier.
They're due a bit more love here.

To be fair, I haven't heard any of those banRAB' stuff in a long time. At the time it all seemed fairly boring and samey to me and I guess I just never looked back.
