most underrated movies

I'm resurrecting an old thread. :D

Over four years on from the OP - what films do you consider to be underrated?

My choice is from 2007:

AMAZING GRACE

To me, this film deserves far more recognition than it has ever received. Very poignant. Very powerful. Very moving. Beautifully made. And a must see.

I'm off now to watch it for the umpteenth time. :)

Tarsem's The Fall. Didn't get a widespread cinema release, mixed reviews from the critics, but I thought it was great. Stunning visuals and a nice story (about a story).

Interesting. There seems to be a fair number of films cropping up here that I'd class as being very highly regarded and certainly not underrated, though perhaps this is more in an academic way of seeing things.

i.e IF.., Being There, Blow Out (one of De Palma's finest, I'd agree) and The Long Good Friday.

Others: Risky Business (Tom!), Eyes Wide Shut (again!) and Hard Eight.

Cube is one of the worst films ever and if it's under-rated then it should be even more so!

What's the criteria? Critical acclaim or box office success?

The 1968 black comedy thriller Pretty Poison, starring Anthony Perkins and Tuesday Weld.

Roger Corman's I Never Promised You A Rose Garden is also a little-seen study in slightly exploitatively but gruellingly-staged mental anguish.

The Long Good Friday and Scum are not under-rated, they are acknowledged as genuine classics of British cinema.

ID is rubbish, although it does have some camp value. It doesn't belong on any list with your other two choices. It's not in the same league.

Don't think I've ever seen the film, but co-incidentally, and nothing to do with the film, I loved the TV show of the same name, starring Holly Hunter as Detective Grace Hanadarko. Brilliant show - finally canned after only three seasons because overseas DVRAB sales didn't live up to expectations. Idiots!

As for films that I really like, and most other folks say is terrible, my choice would probably be Cutthroat Island, starring Gena Davis. Great pirate rollicking romp of a movie which I never tire of watching on at least an annual basis.
