Most underrated director

Just too many to narrow it down, so here's my Top 10...

Nicolas Roeg (Performance, Walkabout, Don't Look Now)

Ken Russell (Women In Love, The Devils, Altered States)

Atom Egoyan (Exotica, The Sweet Hereafter, Felicia's Journey)

Peter Weir (Picnic at Hanging Rock, Fearless, The Truman Show)

David Gordon Green (George Washington, All The Real Girls, Undertow)

Lynne Ramsay (Morvern Callar, Ratcatcher)

Bernard Rose (Candyman, Paperhouse, Immortal Beloved)

Harmony Korine (Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy, Mister Lonely)

Ah now that you said it, I see your point, Scorsese had to wait half a lifetime for his Oscar and, to some, on the film less worthy than all his others especially Raging Bull.

underrated is a difficult term to use, since in the right forums, such directors are respected and rated, it's just that they are not necessarily well known in the wider public domain.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet is a personal favourite of mine - an excellent visionary and storyteller in the mold of Gilliam (only better..). Obviously best known for Amelie, but your average Joe on the street wouldn't know who he is, even if they know his most popular film...so therefore, is he underrated? I don't know...
 
For me its Christopher Nolan the only film people really no is The Dark Knight not many people i no have heard of the brilliance that is Memento or Insomnia.
