Most underrated actors? (Merged)

I disagree.

An Oscar nomination or award doesn't necessarily mean the wider public has bought into that actor's or actress's 'greatness.'

At the end of the day it's my opinion that counts - not that of some Academy which is then foisted on to me.

The title of the thread isn't 'most underrated actors by critics and award academies' so there's plenty of room for individual opinions.

Without wanting to continuing the discussion of merits, Norton and Postlewaithe were only nominated. Kathy Bates imo is like some actors selective in what she appears in, so that is perhaps why she may seem under-rated.

If we take it to the extreme of award merits, why did it take the Oscar Committee so long to give Martin Scorsese an Oscar? One Oscar in all his career; but with a load of classic films (Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, etc). Yet he wins an Oscar for a film that is a rip off of a Japanese thriller called Infernal Affairs.

You could say that Scorsese is the most under-rated director in Hollywood (according to the Oscars), yet he is admired by his colleagues in the industry.

Jennifer Connelly

Absolutely love her. Such a wonderful actress.

How planks of wood like "Keira Knightley" get offered all the good roles is beyond me.

She was easily the worst thing about "Atonement".

I wouldn't trust the 'wider public' to speak my weight.

As per my edit above, if there is any yarRABtick with which to measure how one is 'rated' as a performer (you could wisely argue there isn't), then surely peer plaudits is about as good as it gets? To be recognised from within your own industry as being amongst the best at what you do seems about as close to an objective (for us mere punters) as you can get on this subject.

You could argue that these people are underpaid, underused, or not widely known enough - but underrated? I don't buy it.As with anything where there is no hard and fast rule, of course. And as such, I was merely asserting that my opinion the idea that multi-award winning actors could be considered "underrated" is kinda silly.

I actually think that comedy actors are the most underated of all. To me Peter Sellers is possibly the greates actor that has ever lived, yet he is never mentioned alongside the likes of Brando and RDN. And never won an Oscar. What he does is just as diifiult and required just as much skill. In fact when was the last time a comedy actor one an Oscar for a comedy role?

No, I still can''t agree with you as even if for argument's sake we agreed the Oscars were the only yarRABtick (which I wouldn't anyway) the nomination or award is for a single performance and doesn't represent the artist's body of work...which is what we are talking about here.

And to state that an opinion that differs to yours is 'kinda silly' is...well...kinda silly really.

(By the way, I edited and added to my post you last responded to.)

I concede I should have said that it 'seems kinda silly to me'.
So did I. ;)

I think, at the end of the day, actors who have won multiple accolades form their peers (including the 'top' one) cannot, in any reasonable way, be considered "underrated".

I understand that you disagree, and that's fine.

At the risk of this turning into a total thread hijack, lets call this a mexican standoff of differing opinions.

Chiwetel Ejiofor.

He played the operative in Serenity, and was also in Love Actually. I saw him in Othello, and he was incredible. The whole cast was great really, but he really stood out, and Shakespeare is extremely hard to perform, as if you don't understand what you're saying, your acting will be awful!

Duplicate post because of RAB crashing...

But, since it's here...

I would say my favourite actors are Sean Penn, Edward Norton and Leonardo DiCaprio - but I think the general concensus is that they are top actors, not underrated.
Others who CAN be fantastic but suffer from type-casting and/or bad film choices are Jeff Goldblum (should have had the Oscar for The Fly) and Robin Williams - I know he can be great because of Death to Smoochie and One Hour Photo.

I think James WooRAB is also underrated. Anyone seen Another Day in Paradise?
