Most Under rated Movies Ever

I like Dune. It has many flaws, which especially rankle where they are also departures from the book. The whole thing about using sound as a weapon, for example, undermines the book's notion of them having an advantage because their ethical stance gains the loyalty and fervour of their men. The plot is simplified to a ludicrous degree. Also, the special effects are shoddy in places.

What I like most about it is the characters, an aspect of the book I think the film captures perfectly. Also, the visuals are sometimes very striking and beautiful. The representation of the Guild Navigator folding space, for example, was brilliant. That's how it must have been. Also, some of the extra material, such as the early meeting between the Emperor and the Navigator, worked very well; as if the meeting had happened but got dropped from the book for some reason.

I can't believe you dared say it! Shocking :D

I'm going for Hell Comes To Frogtown because I rented it back in the day when you go through one of those "let's try and find the worst film ever made" phases, and it was very funny and entertaining to be fair :)

Also, I rented Frankenfish purely because it had the worst title ever, but it's a pretty decent b-movie flick :)

Warners have hated it ever since it was in the can. The American Christian Right. Stick the two together and you have no DVD show.

The partially reconstructed version is apparently going to be shown this August on Sky Arts, so HD recorders at the ready if you're lucky enough to have one.

I wouldn't consider Galaxy Quest to be underrated, as it got a lot of critical acclaim when it came out and made a lot of money I think. Film magazines still mention it.

I would agree with Tremors, one of my favourite films of all time.

I'd also have to mention Grosse Point Blank (I've just nominated Martin Q. Blank as one of my favourite film characters) and Ocean's Twelve, which improves every time you watch it.

Stage Beauty - Billy Cruddup was amazing and the storyline/cinematography were absolutely superb.

Japanese Story - Toni Collette deserved an oscar nomination for this outstanding part, if not the oscar itself. The film is also outstanding imo.

Just finished watching Galaxy Quest with Tim Allen, and in my opinion that film was criminally over looked!!! Also i feel that a mention has to go out to the B-Movie CLassic Tremors with kevin Bacon!!!

Any other Movies that might have slipped under the net that deserve more credit than what they got???

I think Galaxy Quest is hilarious! And yes, very underrated. "Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!" :D Tremors is also great, "Then we all run like god damn bastarRAB" :D

I always thought "The Faculty" was underrated as well as "Last Action Hero" too. Clever films. Although I did watch Last Action Hero whilst high on LSD so that may have had a beneficiary factor in my judgement :o It was 16 years ago! :D

I've just commented on this film in the best double acts thread, and thought I should add it here, in case it makes anyone want to rush out and buy it :)

Midnight Run (1988) starring Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin. For all those who think that De Niro can't do comic, watch this. He makes a great pair with Grodin. It's a buddy/comedy/action film which most people I know have never heard of. It was a very well-received film which is still mentioned by film magazines (if that helps to convince anybody) and is very well thought of.

I mostly like it because of the buddy/comedy element to be honest. They have such great chemistry and make such an unlikely pair.

Black Sheep. The one with Chris Farley and David Spade. Chris Farley was one of the funniest comedic actors ever yet nobody has ever even heard of him.

these haven't been mentioned

I can watch these time and again

The Natural
Pleasantville
Soldier

Eneny of the State
We watched Enemy of the State the other night, which made me thing of some other paranoia type things

Pelican Brief
Conspiracy Theory

(in fact i,ll start a thread on this ....)

note re one mentioned above - rounders - i never realised teddy KGB was John Malkevich

I think it's genius, the sense of paranoia in the film is great, right up until the end. Kevin Williamson at his best. "I'll fu**ing shoot her!" :D and " If you were going to take over the world, would you blow up the White House 'Independence Day' style, or sneak in through the back door?"
