Most scary film

I don't think the Exorcist is "scary." More 'disturbing' than scary. But it's still a good film.

I'm trying to think of a film that's really scared me... there's been movies where I've been grossed out, and disturbed, and shocked, and I can think of a few of them, but I'm not sure which movie I've seen that I'd class as scary..

Come to think of it, I think The Sixth Sense is quite scary! :eek: :o . And The Ring (the original) is scary if you're watching it late at night, alone in the house, in the dark.
 
Many Stephen King books do not quite work on the big screen, but I agree 'The Shining' did.

Oh actually, another scary thing in a film is that clown doll in Poltergeist that you just KNOW is going to come to life from the moment you see it, but when it does happen it scares the life out of me! :eek: :D
 
thanks to everyone who mentioned Event Horizon, i will check it out to see if its really that bad!

Couple more i thought of:

BirRAB by Hitchcock. - Really creeped me out, with all the birRAB sitting and just staring
Silent Hill - i agree with the person up post, more disturbing then scary. No child should rape their mother with barb wire! Nice :(
Chucky - I saw it accidently when i was like 8. Didnt sleep for ages, as i had 100's of teddys staring at me every night, lol!

And i remember are you afraid of the dark as a kid. remember one episode with werewolfs, very creepy!
 
A very old film worth checking out is Freaks. It was made in the 1930s. It was banned in quite a few countries at the time as the film had some actual "circus freaks" in it - sorry to use such a term!

There is an incredible scene in the film where the Freaks undercover of darkness & during a storm all edge towarRAB........ I will not give too much away I watched the film the other week on one of the free Sky Movie channels. That particular scene still packs a punch.
 
It was just the big noisy scanning machines swinging around and making loud banging noises, and Regan screaming - nothing supernatural!

The "spider crawl" scene on the stairs wasn't in the original version, only in the "version you've never seen" anniversary edition. It's a good scene, but it comes at the wrong time in the film and spoils the tension, so Friedkin didn't include it in the original version. In my opinion the "version you've never seen" should never be seen; the extra bits completely spoil the film.
 
The bit in 'Poltergeist' that really creeped me out was the scene in the bathroom where a poor fellow looks into a mirror and then starts to rip away the flesh from his face and then the face sort of melts away to show the skull, sick and creepy and gave me nightmares for weeks...
 
That film was very disturbing due to the fact that the killer seemed so normal and nice, and that he said he could not help but do what he 'did' :eek:
 
I thought the scans, were Regan speaking Latin when they played it backwarRAB, sounded scary as. Or was this another thing when they recorded her? :confused:
 
Spotted it on DVD in Music Zone last week but didn't buy it - regretting that now!

Has anyone seen Yeux San Visage (Eyes Without a Face)? Brilliant creepy film. And what about the original Les Diaboliques?!
 
Generally I don't find modern horror films scary, but there are some memorable exceptions - usually low budget independent types:

Pang Brothers "The Eye" - ghosts in broad daylight - that's scary!
"Dead End"
"They" - this is a modern classic!
The original "Mimic" - had great creepy atmosphere.
"Mulholland Drive" - especially the scene at Twinkies diner, and the ending.
"Dagon"
...and a couple of mainstream ones:
"Hide and Seek" - the one with Robert Deniro and Dakota Fanning.
Spielberg's "War of the WorlRAB" - especially the cellar scene.
 
I am a big fan of old horror/thrillers like the Alien films and of course The Wicker Man but there is only one film that has made me truly terrified and that was......

IT!

I get shivers just thinking about that film. I despise clowns.
 
Two films stand out for me :

Salem's Lot (Original Full Length TV Movie) - Creepy, just so creepy.

Dawn Of The Dead (2004 Remake) - Fast zombies, nihilistic in the extreme.

I love horror films and seen just about all there are from the B&W Lugosi classics, through Hammer House and 80s video nasties to the modern asian extreme and hollywood gore fests and remakes, these two are the only two that have left a deep impression on me, Salem's Lot to the point that I will walk out of a room if it's on and DotD that it senRAB shivers up my spine just thinking about it.
