Most scary film

I got creeped out by the Nightmare on Elm street films as a kid, Id always shudder as the road down the block was called 'Elm Steet' Id always imagine Freddy stalking the streets in the dark.

1.2 Freddys after you
3.4 Freddys at your door
5.6 get a crusifix
7-8 dont stay up late
9.10 Freddys back again

I got the trilogy on dvd and it still scares the hell out of me.
 
As another poster mentioned, I found the Nightmare on Elm Street films (well, the original at least) terrifying as a kid. I find Freddy funny now, the New Nightmare one I thought was pretty good.

As an adult these have spooked me -

The Changeling
Ju-On: The Grudge
The Shining (the TV mini, was never bothered by the Kubrick version).
And, weirdly - Silent Hill. It didn't give me sleepless nights but I found the tone of it really eerie and some of the monsters/ghosts were inventive.
 
Am I right in thinking that modern big budget horror films are much less scary than low budget independent horrors? Anyone have any favourite scary films, and particularly scary moments in films?
 
Oh yes, 'The Excorcist'

Saw it on a miserable, wet Saturday in Oxford in 1974 while visiting relatives.
Only went in the cinema to get out of the rain!

A few nights later a small earthquake shook the dressing table mirrors :eek:
 
I'd go along with that, there's something about the grimy, slightly homemade feel of the low budget ones that brings a certain realism (not matter how bad the makeup is) that the slick Hollywood versions just can't get.

Compare the original Texas Chainsaw with the remake, for example.
 
Really? Who is the author? I would love to read the book. Only seen the film and as always books tend have more effect on the reader. Well for me they do. :)
 
This thread title is another one which pops up regularly.

Still, at the risk of repeating myself yet again:

I agree that scary does not equal gory and visceral, although one of the scariest movies ever, John Carpenter's "The Thing" is very much in that mould.

But good scary movies are often about what you don't see. The original version of "The Haunting" is a good case in point.

Also, there are quite a few films which are disturbing and horrific because of that. For example, the original Dutch version of "The Vanishing" or David Lynch's "Eraserhead" (you can tell I'm obviously a fan of that one...)

But, i did watch the film on TV, and it was split into two halfs.. i found the second half REALLY boring :(
 
Oh God! I'd forgotten about that one - don't unbrick the fireplace :eek: !!! Gave me nightmares for weeks, that one! It's probably not quite as scary now as it was when I was 8 or 9.
 
I think Eraserhead was the film I was watching at about 2 in the morning when I was ill in bed one night when I was about 14, I'd turned my portable on as I couldn't sleep. My head was spinning as it was, I thought I was having some bizarre dream, it was horrible. Scary in a very surreal way.
 
I just love these 2 films and Halloween H20 makes a good tie up of the story.

I remember my parents letting me rent Halloween 2 when I was about 13 and I was terrified when it was just Michael Myers chasing JLC through the abandoned hospital.
I was scared for ages after it but still kept asking to rent the film again and again.
 
I think 'It' was made as a television mini - series that was very badly edited for video which had quite a lot of scenes missing, however you can now get the whole uncut version on DVD because of length, this film is on two disc's and the running time is the full 3 hours. It's also got great audio commentary from Dennis Christopher, Tim Reid, John Ritter, Richard Thomas and director Tommy Lee Wallace

...And a great big creepy Clown lol
 
Talking of made for TV movies, can someone help me on an old movie I think it may have been an old Hammer movie.

It was one of the anthology films (3 or 4 films based around one film).

One of the films there was this guy who had bought this African Wooden Doll and was told to never take the chain from around its neck or it would come to life. When it did come to life it had these real nasty snapping teeth, one scene they locked it in a suitcase but it got out. Ring any bells with anyone?

I saw this when i was a kid and it was one of the scariest films i had seen probably not so now, but I have been looking for this movie for years now but don't know what it is called.

If anyone could help it would be great. As I have only ever seen it on TV a couple of times and that was back in the 80's, not seen it on tv since. If I knew the title I may be able to do a search on the net to buy a copy.
