Most popular anime in America

This thread is for what you think is the most popular anime in America ever. If I forgot some suggestions, please tell me. I'm not counting movies only such as Spirited Away.

Yeah, it's clearly no contest. Pokemon is the most popular show, based on advertisement and the fact that it's still going. Most of the choices aren't even known among casuals.

I'm having a hard time between Pokemon, Speed Racer, and DBZ. DBZ's the top anime property in the US and has been an elite anime in America for years but Speed Racer and Pokemon are just a step ahead. It's either Pokemon or Speed Racer probably. Yu-Gi-Oh! isn't far behind either.

I'd say Pokemon is better known as a game than anime series and that the most well-known of the lot listed here would probably be Dragonball Z.

Very true. Yu-Gi-Oh! is more popular as a game than a series probably. Speed Racer is also very popular because of the movie and all the products and advertising that was poured into the movie.

Yes, I know the movie borabed, but there was so much advertising in that movie that it really made more people aware of its exsistance. It was already popular to begin with.

As much as I hate to say it, Pokemon. C'mon, every kid knows about it. Back in the day, Sailor Moon and Dragonball were HUGE, but now almost no new anime fan has even watched those.

In today's world, it has to be Pokemon followed by DBZ. Pikachu is in the Macy's Thanksgiving parade, here. I'm guessing Naruto is third considering the manga's popularity, then Yu-Gi-Oh, and then...Sailor Moon? It had its following in the 90's.

The biggest cult following is probably Ghost in the Shell. Even when I was a newbie to anime, I at least knew the name.

I have no illusions that this is all conjecture. Until somebody actually does a poll testing name recognition......also, it doesn't seem so easy to me to compare the popularity of a series in the last generation to popularity today. I mean, comparing some of these is almost like comparing Thundercats or GI Joe to Avatar or Spongebob.

I'm going with Pokemon too. I can see DBZ still being popular and all, with having games still coming out with their characters, but Pokemon has been going strong for over ten years and I think is the most recognizable anime series with the general public. After all Pikachu still has a float in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Sorta like how everybody knows the DBZ dub song "Rock the Dragon" . I remeraber one time, I rewinded one of my old VHS tapes to hear "Rock the Dragon" like 20 times in a row. LOL
