Most overrated movie ever

Has to be The Shamshank Redemption for me.

Boring beyond belief. Overhyped, pretentious, tedious, overlong and basically a yawn from start to finish.

Blade Runner. Soooooooooo overrated. Sooooooo Slowwwwwwwwwww I Zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Rambo 2 +. First Blood was by far the best & most down to earth, the only thing being how it differed from the book in that Rambo is killed by Trautman in the end because he has just lost the plot way too much to be stopped any other way.

The new Star Trek film was just a complete pile of pants so over hyped I won't be bother with any follow ups.

Ninja Turtles! The cartoons were bad enough but the live action were just dire.

Each CGI movie we're harangued into accepting as being more 'awesome' than the last, when they increasingly just look like tiresomely noisy computer games.

Mamma Mia
LOTR
Star Wars
HSM 3
Titanic
Mr + Mrs Smith
Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Ocean's 11, 12, 13, or however many they've made

Wow! ADHD anyone?

For all those that said:

deer hunter
american beauty
shawshank
LOTR
Bladerunner
Goodfellas
Scarface

...were overrated, or 'bored' them. Please tell me what films you think deserve high praise. I am genuinely interested.

American pie

How this movie has spawned half a dozen sequels is beyond me.

The whole premise of the movie was that sex with a pie was like sex with a woman (Sorry for not putting this in a spoiler tag).

If that were true the human race would have died out long ago.
The theory is immediately disproved by the fact that a woman does not have a crust.

It is utter rubbish and doesn't deserve to be the pimple on the arse of the masterpiece that is 'Animal House'

My top 5 are -

Goodfellas.
Psycho.
Citizen Kane.
Taxi Driver.
Terminator II.

I like all the films I've listed with the exception of Kane, but they are ridiculously overrated.

Wasn't overly impressed with this year's BAFTA big winner, 'The Hurt Locker'. There's some tense scenes but I didn't really like any of the characters.

As an aside, why is Evangeline Lilly credit FOURTH on the film's DVD box?! She's on screen for about two minutes, if that!

I love most of the films mentioned in this thread but there you go.

The films I mentioned were all pretty decent (maybe with exception of No Country...) but vastly overrated IMO.

I took rated to mean having a strong fan base, or popular. For example, everyone raved about TSAM, but I found it mildly amusing. Anchorman was even worse - I know loaRAB of people who think it's comic genius, and I managed 15 minutes...

Forrest Gump. Don't get it at all.

Lord of the Rings. They are enjoyable films, all of them, but not masterpieces by any means whatsoever.

The Shawshank Redemption is the same, I enjoy it but could never rave over it.

The Dark Knight.

Predictable plot twists, poor pacing, PC declawed batman, wooden acting by Bale and nothing particularly original or intimidating by Ledger either.
