Most Overlooked Movies of all Time

I agree with those who mentioned A Life Less Ordinary and Playing by Heart. I found both of those DVDs in a bargin bin for $5 at my local Wal-Mart. It was good cause I got two good DVDs for $10, but sad cause they were in there with a bunch of crapy and unheard of movies and they shouldn't be considered the same.

I'd like to add to the list:

Happy Accidents (2000) - This is a romantic comedy that stars Vincent D'Onofrio and Marissa Tomei. It's an independent feature which I know is the main reason it's overlooked like so many great idies are, but it's definately worth looking for.

The Whole Wide World (1996) - This is an amazing movie, it's based on a true story, the story of Novalyne Price and her relationship with Robert E. Howard who is thought by some to be the greatest pulp writer of all time (he wrote Conan the Barbarian and Kull the Conqueror). The movie stars Vincent D'Onofrio and Ren

I agree with Hairspray. I like how a lot of the people on this thread have Harry P avies. It's cute.

I think the movie Dick was overlooked.

I almost agree there, they weren't overlooked...:look:..and I hated both.

Life as a House was a great, overlooked movie.

:D

The Fith Element - couldnt agree with u more on RTT. I think it was a great movie and makes me cry every time i watch it - it wasnt even released at the cinema if i rember correctly over here. Another movie with denzel that i feel was overlooked in the UK was John Q another brilliant performance.

I think American history X isnt given as much credit as it deserves again Ed is fantastic and deliveres a great performance but i think alot of people dont give it a chance as by word of mouth it seems to concerntrate on the violent moment that nearly everyone i know has to look away from the screen and most people make up their mind that they dont really fancy it .

Confidence was great. I watched it months ago and was glued to the couch.

I'd like to add The Prophecy to the list of overlooked movies.

I saw most of the movies mentioned and loved The Whole Wide World(saw it on ShowTime twice and never knew the name until whoever mentioned it on here) and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I hope The Academy at least gives Jim Carrey a nomnation for his preformance in this. He was fantastic, as was the movie.

Other good movies that I believe were overlooked is:

Bound:Violet is the sexy mistress of Ceasar, a money launderer for the Mob. The comfortable Family lifestyle has become drudgery--until Violet meets Corky. Corky, a convicted thief out on parole, is hired as the maintenance person in the exclusive apartment complex where Violet and Ceasar reside. After forming a strong friendship with Corky, Violet wants out of the Mob lifestyle and sees Corky's theft expertise as her ticket to a fresh start. If Corky is willing to steal the two million dollars in cash stashed in the apartment that Ceasar must deliver to Marzzone the next day, together the women can escape the Mafia. However, when Ceasar discovers the money missing, he reacts differently than they anticipated... to say the least. Bound together against the wrath of Ceasar, Violet and Corky must rely on their instincts to survive. It's very good but I've never met someone besides my sister, who's seen it.

Welcome to the DollhouseTodd Solondz's WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE follows the painful daily trials of Dawn "Wienerdog" Wiener (Heather Matarazzo), an awkward, nerdy 12-year-old. The middle child between her geeky older brother, Mark (Matthew Faber), and her sickeningly sweet little sister, Missy (Daria Kalinina), Dawn has a rough time with her family and everything else, including school and boys. She's obsessed with Mark's hunky bandmate, Steve (Eric Mabius), but the only guy who pays her any attention is the local thug, Brandon (Brendan Sexton III), who constantly threatens her with rape.

With startling accuracy and humor, Solondz captures the hell known as junior high in his blow-by-blow account of Dawn's difficult life. One of the darkest and funniest tales of adolescence ever filmed, DOLLHOUSE serves as a grateful reminder that puberty strikes only once.
I really enjoyed this movie and it was funny as hell.

and

May: May (Bettis) is a strange (and emotionally disturbed) young woman who was born with a lazy eye, which meant that she grew up wearing an eye patch, ostracized from the rest of the kids socially, with only a spooky doll kept in a glass and wood case to keep her company. Moving to Los Angeles, May takes a job working as a veterinary assistant at an animal hospital where she is befriended by the sexy (and lesbian) receptionist, Polly (Faris), whom she has a brief relationship after a dating experience with an aspiring filmmaker, Adam (Sisto) goes darkly (and bloodily) wrong. As this more-than-slightly cracked woman finds her attempts at human connection failing, she becomes more frustrated... and violent, lashing out at the world, in a blood-soaked effort to make the perfect friend: a doll made out of human parts. I know it sounds like any slasher flick and pretty hockey at that but this movie really well done and the ending is just plain creepy.

Yes, yes, yes! Finally someone else who loves these movies. The Whole Wide World is just a beautiful, beautiful movie.

^^^^ YES...

He's body tranformation, is just WOW..

Primal Fear is AWESOME... Edward is just talented. Awesome twist and his acting was dead on.

What Russell Crowe film?

I thought I was the only person in the world who had seen this movie. It is cute, "Hey, I'm not a virgin anymore"

I've seen All Over the Guy and I thought it was fun. But it was the heterosexual couple the best part of the film. They were terrific and I was the thinking the whole movie how it should've about them. So, it didn't really work for me.

Maybe that's why the movie hasn't done well. Because it can't make it's subject matter interesting.

The other two I'm dying to see. Happy Accidents is playing on IFC so, I'll pretty much watch it soon enough.

Now, now. You just made my day! :D I'm so glad you watched it and liked it!

I agree about Peter Pan (2003). When I saw it I was so in love with it. I felt like I was 10 again.

I hated Snatch though. I'll maybe watch it again with subtitles...

I'd like to add Go to the list. This is an excellent film worthy of praise. Funny like hell and plain smart!

Simply Irresistible w/ Sarah Michelle Gellar was pretty overlooked in my opinion. I  that movie!

---Violet :blinkie:

I definitely agree with whoever said 25th Hour. It was a really powerful, character/story driven drama. Sadly, it was only shown at selected arthouse cinemas when it was released down here in Australia. Edward Norton is amazing.

I totally agree. If more people sat down and watched it I think they would find that they really like it. It has lots of great quotes and wonderful scenes. And I think it's one of Brad's best movies.

I totally agree with Meet Joe Black. It's a very long, complex and ramatic movie, but I love it to peices. It has so much depth to it, yet few people even took the time to watch it.

Another movie I believe to be completely under-rated is The Boondock Saints. It was a small-ish independent film that was completely over-looked at the box-office.

isn't that the skinhead flick? the one with russell crowe is supposed to be good, too.

edward norton, did you see him in primal fear? very good and very freaky!

I don't think Donnie Darko is overlooked at all. I think it's overrated.

I think 'the safety of objects' is incredible and despite the stellar cast, was overlooked.
