"Most Of The Religious Right Are Not Stupid, Just Willfully Ignorant"

have you tried to have a conversation with a vocal theist?

And being "vocal" is not a detriment. Speaking your mind and showing reason is a positive thing.

The article is saying the uber right is NOT stupid, just from only reading the title. So they shouldn't act like it.

Here's what the problem ultimately boils down to:

the people that developed and continue to work to prove evolutionary theory are open to all scientific criticisms of the theory. the people that developed and continue to believe Christianity are not open to criticisms of their religion, either scientific or religious (otherwise they'd have no problem with Muslims, Jews, etc. yet many Christians fervently hate or want to convert those people). The Pope is not accepting of alternative theories, I guarantee you the head of the evolutionary science department (I assume such a thing exists) at, say, Oxford or wherever would be very receptive to well argued and scientifically backed alternative theories.

Aside from the famous ten commandments in front of the courthouse, I don't remeraber any christian getting indignant about government buildings being free of Christian specific decorations.

No one says that anymore, and when they did say it it pretty much was. Not in name maybe, but certainly in practice. Otherwise none of that crap would have flown.

He obviously hasn't left the Liberal stronghold of the upper midwest.

Fine then. When talking about Ron Paul, stop using the phrase "he doesn't believe in evolution", and use the phrase "he doesn't believe in abiogenesis".

Religious people

I love how FOX has an hourly update on Muslim extremism, but it's Christian extremism that's more threatening to Americans.

I've been to over half the states, thanks.

And most of the people in the south are religious. Heck, 85% of the US is religious. I know people who live down there who can't "come out" for fear of social suicide.

More evidence (and boy there's plenty in this thread) that you're one of the militant hater atheists.

Evolution theory is not benign or malignant. Evolution is just an idea. Like many ideas, it has been used by malicious people to justify their ideology, their worldview, even their HATE. Evolution to you is a worldview, whether you realize it or not. You call to the purity of the Scientists, just as Catholics call to the purity of the bishops and Pope. The vast majority of people that believe in evolution don't understand enough of it to even tell the difference between it and spontaneous generation. You have shown yourself to be one of those people in this very thread! You ask for intelligent debate, but if it occurs in this thread, you would not be a contributor.

Look at the whimsical retort I made to your post. I changed very little of the wording. Did you even read it all the way, or just get your panties all sandy after the tenth word?

evolution is not a belief. and Christians can agree the theory of evolution is correct even if they still believe in a deity. evolution happens, you can see it in bacteria daily if you want.

Why are you selectively not answering direct questions?

I asked you "Why do you support a "Willfully Ignorant" person as President?". Please answer it.

You have answered many questions that were not part of the initial post.

Partly, but so too is his support for "Faith Based Initiatives" as well as him appointing Joshua DuBois as head of it.

Then there is the matter of him saying "God bless" all the time, him spending 20 years in Reverend Writes church, until he took so much flack from it, he left and now has Reverend Jim Wallis as his spiritual adviser ... who is on the Presidents "faith council".

Then there are all his comment he had made about his faith, believe in God, etc, etc that you can Google for yourself or see them on Youtube, or read in his books.

Don't play durab, and answer my question ... Why do you support a "Willfully Ignorant" person as President?

There are indeed plenty of atheists and agnostics in the south. And there are indeed some bigoted assholes that treat them like shit, my friend's mother pretty much disowned them because they said they were atheist.

However the bigotry and hatred isn't that widespread, at least in the open, so generally speaking any atheist that is an asshole here would probably have been an asshole anyway.
