most influential anime/manga characters death

Ok like the title says which single characters death has had the biggest impact on the development of the characters or plot of an anime/manga? I began thinking about this after watching tengen toppa gurren lagann. Those of you who have seen it probably know why. Also please enclose your characters in spoiler tags, unless of course you think it's such a popular anime and probably older that nothing that's could be said about it could possibly qualify as a spoiler.

I"m going against my rule here since this series is so old I don't think it'll qualify as a spoiler, in the original dragon ball series when goku goes Oozaru and kills his grandpa.

When Kamina dies, I was absolutely shocked when this happened, and also refreshed. unlike many other animes or shows in which he'd have miracalously have recovered he dies and the viewer and the rest of the characters have to deal with it and adapt

Another gainax series i think of is NGE
Yui, Gendo Ikari's wife how would everything have evolved if that hadn't happened?

I've also got to go a little bit old school and talk about Trigun,
how would Vash have been if knives hadn't have sabotaged the ships?

I know I'm probably forgeting or haven't seen a lot of other anime deaths, but I am looking forward to see where this goes!

just to update this I have remembered a couple other influential deaths in anime, and come on people where are you?

From bleach
What would have become of Ichigo, and his father if his mother Masaki hadn't died from that hollow? would his reiatsu have grown quicker or slower than before?

And one piece i'm not going to put this one in spoilers because it's right there in the introduction. What would One Piece be like if Gold D. Roger was not killed?
 
Um, big FMA spoilers. I'm not going to both tagging it, but avert your eyes if you haven't seen either animes/read the manga.



Maes Hughes' death in FMA was a pretty damn big deal. It was the point where both animes really picked up speed and the Elrics and Mustang and company really began investigating corruption in the military/the philosoper's stone. And in Brotherhood, it lead to those really intense episodes when Roy discovered Envy killed him.
 
Well code geass the death of lelouchs mother was the entire reason he became the man he did.. there's obviously more to it than that but i just got home from wakeboarding all day and am moving tomorrow and don't feel like going into any more depth ahah
 
Berserk

The death of the Band of the Hawk at the hands of the apostles during the eclipse. As if Griffith's capture and the hunting down of the Band of the Hawk wasn't enough, once they're all reunited again, things get even worse. Hard to say who was affected more after the eclipse, Guts, or Caska (for obvious reasons).

Code Geass Spoiler Alert!

Euphie in Code Geass. It pretty much sparked everything that happened after in some way or another. Honestly though....Euphie sucked. IMO

i think the spark was the moms death because they would have never been put in the position they were, thus for not giving him as much of a reason to hate the empire as much as he did!
 
Maybe but

He was all set to go along with Euphies plan. She could have very well ended the war (which would have been extremely lame) but she was geassed and killed putting all previous animosity into overdrive.
 
I was going to mention the vegetta thing also but it's like yeah he "died" but not really. The only other death(s) that were permanent in the dragon ball saga were
when goku's "grandfather" died in the original series, and when that android with the orange mohawk (16 I think??) died. I would also have added when Goku died in the other reality when grown up trunks comes back to the present but again it's not a real "death"
 
Goku's death in Trunks' timeline is a real death though, since there weren't any dragonballs to wish him back. In Trunks' timeline, those who died (everyone), stayed dead.

But I included the Vegeta thing because I didn't read the OP closely enough, and included a death that most influenced me, not the story. I've since edited my original post.
 
no problem dude, what I meant that it's not real is that there was still a Goku left alive somewhere, and how do you quantify the events of an alternate timeline to the timeline of the main story
