Morton's Neuroma

I had surgery Dec. 2008 for the removal of a Morton Neuroma and now I have what they say could be internal scar tissue on the bottom of my foot. Does anyone know how to break up scar tissue? I have had 12 visits to Physical Therapist with no improvement. I am very upset  to have almost the same problem after surgery that I had before the surgery. Any advice will be appreciated.

Sorry, karmadean. I have had Morton's neuroma on one foot for several years now and developed it on the other more recently. My orthopedist has said that she saves surgery as an absolute last result exactly because post-op problem can develop. Sorry to be saying that to you now.

Do you have orthodics? Or did you try orthodics before surgery? That is the way we have been treating my neuroma; though I do not know whether it would help with scar tissue.

SunnyR, the lump on top of my foot before the surgery was the neuroma, after the surgery it was scar tissue, I have been massaging it a lot and it is almost gone. There are options other than surgery, but they usually don't work. You can get cortisone shots, but if I were you, I would skip the cortisone and go for the alcohol shots that is supposed to deaden the nerve. Neither one worked for me, but you never know, and hoonestly if the alcohol shots work, they are a better recourse to the surgery. The surgery leaves you with a scar and usually the toe that has been slowly leaving a larger space between the toes will not go back in place. My doc did lenghten the tendon in my toe hoping it would go back in place, but he warned me that it usually doesn't work, and it didn't for me, so now my second toe leans more towards the big toe, not happy about that, but i am certainly happy to be rid of the pain.

Sunny,

Thanks for the advice. I think there is no better advice than those who have been there done that! The first thing I am doing is ice/heat/ice/heat for 20 min. 3 times a day if my schedule allows. Trying to not be on my feet as much and making sure my shoes don't pinch. My next course will be the alcohol injections as per your advice. I want to avoid surgery if possible!

Thanks again,
From one Sunny to another:wave:

I also have scar tissue after my neuroma surgery, mine is on the top of foot. Just keep rubbing it every day, this will break it up. I had my surgery Sep. 08, I really don't have any problems except the scar tissue, and it is almost gone. Be sure and keep massaging it, and hard.

Sunny,

I am trying to decide what to do about my Morton's Neuroma. I have numbness of the 3rd and 4th toes on my left foot. Swelling on the ball of my foot. A lump on the top of my foot that surprises me. A click sometimes when I get up in the morning and step on my foot. Tingling up my foot and leg. Pain in the ball of my foot when I am on my feet a lot.

What I want to ask is, what was the lump on the top of your foot? I haven't had any of the injections yet. I know I need to do something but I really want to research this first.

Any help you can give me is so appreciated.

Thanks,
Sunny R.

I had Morton's Neuroma surgery on Dec. 8, 2008 and I am still having problems. The pain isn't as severe but I still have the sensation that I am walking on a knot and the top of my foot is very sensitive to touch, making it difficult wearing shoes and having the cover touch it at night. I have had therapy which included massage, ice and ultrasound with no improvement. I visited a different doctor and have just finished with a series of 21 steriod pills. Hopefully this will solve the problem.

Karmadean,

Thanks for sharing your experience with surgery. I want to avoid the surgery if at all possible! I had basal thumb joint surgery on my left hand and that was the last resort, but I know about scar tissue and pain after surgery. It took about a year for my hand to work properly (still have weakness) and the scar tissue is finally better after almost 2 years. Of course my hand surgery involved bone. Did you do any physical therapy after your surgery? My physical therapist used different techniques to break up scar tissue. I was told that after any surgery, you need to give it a year for proper healing and even after that there will be positive changes over time.

Thanks again, Sunny R.
