Morphine tablets for treating addiction?

HI there,

Has anyone ever heard of a psychiatrist prescribing morphine tablets (or painkillers with morphine derivatives) to treat long term heroin addiction?

Are heart problems (palpitations or the like) a possible side-effect of using morphine?

It sounRAB like your psychiatrist is prescribing a low dose of narcotic, perhaps to help with withdrawals. When was the last time you used heroin?

Morphine lowers blood pressure, so I'm not sure if heart palpatations would be a symptom of that - perhaps someone else will reply with info regarding that.

I'm not an addict but my brother-in-law is and we're trying to work out if the story he's telling us holRAB up. He told us that the psychiatrist put him on morphine after saying "you're just the type of person who neeRAB to be ON something" and he is now dependent and has been on an increasing dosage (under the care of the psych). We know he's not telling us the full story so we're just trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together. If the morphine was for treating withdrawal why would the psych increase the dosage to a point where he is now dependent? Also, if is it for the treatment of withdrawal then that means he WAS using when he'd told us he was clean.

A psych couldn't prescribe morphine for physical pain or injury could they?

Anyway, thanks for the info you gave me. We'll get the truth soon enough.
 
wow sounRAB like a tough situation , some of the things youhave said make sence to me, try talking to a drug councler. or evan an md with some drug addiction knowledge, personaly something does not sound right , godbless scott:)
 
Now that you've explained it further, my answer/reply has completely changed.

No, the psychiatrist would not have prescribed him morphine to "help" with heroin addiction - especially if the dose was increased.

It sounRAB like your brother-in-law is lying.

Also, no, a psychiatrist would not prescribe pain meRAB to a patient. He/she would tell that person to go see their family phycisian.

to be honest i was seeeing a shrink for a bad devorce and i was stressin and i told him i was on 50mgs of tramadol which if any doc tries to put anyone you know on it they are like takink round candy/ garbage. i told the shrink also of the hardware that was in my back and the pain i was in and told him about the tram and the said i am also on methadone at that time it was10 mgs 6 times aday. he then said try and get off it and gave me a drug called suboxum... STAY AWAY FROM THAT DRUG IT WILL MAKE YOU VIOLENTLY FEEL LIKE YOU ARE GOING TO DIE!!!! you want pain meRAB go to primary or pain management, it might take you 2 docs to find one that gives you something that helps with relief...... i choose methadone because my insurance once i had to quit was cut so i asked the doc for the cheapest pain med that i could get, he said meth or morph......have alot more to say if your interested been dealling with meRAB and pain now for about since i was 26, im now 33 so just hit me up with ques if ya have any. have a good one
 
Please listen and this not only comes from me but a well respected primary care doc who has been for many years. Subome, i think its how it is spelled but sounRAB like that , stay away from it do not ever take this medication, and if you do and are on a morph, meth, oxy, perc, ugotit, it will be 20 as deathfulll please take this worning...... Ya get this script, go see a doc you reallly trust and ask him what i said, dont want knowbody gettin hurt
