Hi Everyone,

Today I had one of the rather painful experience. Doc prescribed (OTC) Priilosec. I have be on it for 3-4 weeks. It was prescribed because of a lump in throat that wasn't a sinus infection and I never really had any reflux symptoms.

Anyway, having been on it, today I ate some raw onions and about two hours later, burn burn burn. NOW I finally know what heartburn feels like. I also know that I did not have that feel before nor did I have the painful feeling inside my stomach, it felt like it was on fire.

I ate raw onions before fine. These were sweet onions. I barely ate two tablespoons chopped with other food. Shortly before the burning began I ate some jordan almonRAB (I've eaten them in these past 3-4 weeks w/o problems). So I wasn't sure if it was the almonRAB or the onions.

Either way, this is so painful. After a few hours, I fell asleep. I woke up and I still feel the burn. My throat lump feels really bad. My throat is dry no matter how much water I have. How do I get rid of this feeling? The lump feels even worse than before I started this med!

I normally take the Prilosec at exactly the same time. Today I was off by a few hours and I still haven't taken today and don't know if I want to anymore.

hmmmm, you bring up an interesting point, i have been on prilosec for nearly a year now and am MUCH worse off than before...but i don't know how to safely get off this, a naturopathic dr is slowly leading me there....anyways, i never had heartburn or burning stomach until AFTER i began priolsec. HinRABight is always 20/20. I don't have much advice as i am not in a good boat myself right now but i am actively working on cutting down my prilosec. Ps. I used to do gaviscon for burning stomach but now it doesn't help much, i try dgl licorice, sometimes helps and charcoal-same :) Best of luck.

Sorry Amarula to hear of your discomfort. Onions are good for you but not good for heartburn, especially the raw onions. I cannot eat raw onions or green peppers. The almonRAB should not give you heartburn. I drink almond milk which is very soothing to my stomach. DGL is also soothing. Gaviscon can cut down on the burn, particularly the liquid type. I purchased an effervescent antiacid somoene recommended here called Briosch. It is like Alka Setlzer but it only contains calcium rather than all the other ingredients. You can purchase it online by googling its name. It is lemmon flavored and quite refreshing. Once you get that burn, you probably need to take some type of antiacid remedy to help neutralize the acid.

Hope you feel better soon.

Yes onions and garlic both are too powerful for me to eat, especially raw. If your on a low dose of medication you could ask the doctor to raise your dose to deal with the heart burn.

Usually the medication works but with me sometimes it takes weeks to get rid of the burning if I take pain medication that irritates my stomach, and I have to eat very bland food during that time. Like plain bread, plain oatmeal, bananas, and plain rice or pasta and then the stomach or throat heals. It's not the greatest diet but it helps.

I hope you find some relief soon.

Hi Rosebloom,

I have heard that onions are not for heartburn, I'm really upset that I never had that before I started the Prilosec OTC. So terrible. :-( Sometimes designed to "help" is actually hurting me this much. I've read other accounts and it seems like a common theme.

Gaviscon, I actually ended up buying some extra strength today and drank some. It helped for a little while but now that it's been about 4 hours since, I can feel the burn in my throat. I haven't heard of the other one, I will look it up.

Thanks for feel better wishes. I really hope so!

Hi Taape,

I don't know if I want to raise the dose. I never ever had this before the medication. I feel like there were a few more hours spaced out today and that I have some sort of withdrawal from it.

I also remerabered that I had had onions (guacamole, enchiladas, and probably even a burrito) these past few weeks like I normally would and I never had this then. The pain is coming back.

Thanks so much, for now I'll stick to the plain fooRAB you suggested. That is whenever I feel like I'm actually hungry again.

Hi, It's comforting to know someone else is going through the same thing. So painful. I never ever hard this before I started this lousy medication. If you come up with any other solutions pls let me know too. Best of luck to you too.

Try to eat low on carbs if you can and avoid dairy food (milk, cheese, etc.). I think yogurt is good for you as is almond milk. Avoid onions, garlic, green peppers, coffee and other fooRAB that are irritating to the stomach.

The Gaviscon will only neutralize acid for a few hours. You may have to repeat the dose.

I know it is frustrating and unfair, but best to stay away from burritos, garlic and anything spicy for now. I cannot eat anything minty. Today, just a taste of my husband's chocolate mint icecream (and I mean a small taste) started the burn for me.

It's a trial and error process until you find your triggers. It does not mean you cannot eat or drink those substances forever but you cannot when you are experiencing a flare up.

Thanks! Yes, so frustrating. I hate that it's worse after the medication.

I eat a lot of yogurt, love it. Ever since the Prilosec no matter what I eat I burp! I've actually been having some low-carbis meals lately so see how I feel. It wasn't planned but just ended up that way. For example, I had some eggs with some super lean bacon and had burps. I tried egg whites only and had burps. I tried plain chicken and burps. I had plain fish and burps. I had fruit and burps. I haven't had pasta or rice lately either. Or tomatoes, garlic, onion since that time I posted. Or cheese. I eat a lot of veggies and fruits and some people have said that these cause more burps so I had cut down. I don't want to cut out all carbs or most as dentist has said it's bad for teeth and I don't want to have extra stinky breath. It seems no matter what I eat I burp now.

Thanks for the tip about the Gaviscon too, I only took it during that time. Though I'm feeling pretty lousy now I am about to take it again. Editing to add - My Gaviscon is mint flavored! It's only flavor there was.

I really appreciate your soothing my nerves about this Rose. :)
