Your friend has a very shallow level of acceptance. The intolerance voiced as "stressing" is due to a very limited ability to experience his own energy. That is, he has so much fear within his MIND realm that most of his energy is taken in repressing this, and when asked to reduce this so as to do something else... he experiences panic and intense anxiety which manifests itself as anger.
It is like an extension cord that is supplying electricity to so many things that if it isn't pulled out it will burn out. His MIND is using so much energy to repress so many fears that it cannot allow any of this energy to be used to do anything else. His desire to "please" you puts him in conflict with his own MIND, and this quickly causes his MIND to feed Delusional Thinking to the Left-Hemisphere of his brain that causes him to try and make you back off and stop threatening him.
He is of course fully unaware of what is going on within himself.
You have two options: 1. Learn to live with what is going on in hopes that some day he will seek professional help that is competent enough to be helpful. 2. Gently encourage him to leave as you seek to protect yourself and clear the field for someone with less baggage.
Peace
