Mom had to get throat stretched but why?

Her Mom had to have it done and she had to have it done. What causes it to where it has to be stretched? Is this heriditary? (sp)
 
if they both had it done it sounds like it's genetic, maybe both of them developed small/narrow esophaguses naturally. I have a friend who has to have his stretched about every 5-10 years. It contracts on him and he has trouble swallowing. I think other conditions that may cause scar tissue may cause it to have to be stretched.
