Mock The Week - Series 9, BBC2 Thursdays 10pm (Merged)

MTW is hardly worth watching without Frankie Boyle, imo.
It was interesting to see him on Jonathan Ross on Friday, and he said that the show had just got too competitive and they were all fighting to get their jokes in. It's a shame that Frankie, who is the funniest of the lot, felt he had to leave because of this.

Last Thursdays episode hit a new depth of unfunny.

That Jack fella? Annoying. Not funny. Who keeps getting this posh tw*t on these shows?

Frankie not only carried the show but brought the best out of the others. Now even Hugh and Andy looked bored.

Finally, please no more women - they aint funny!!!

MTW is a bit "leftie-PC" to a certain extent, they all share the same middle class political views, which is basically New Labour/Cameron Tories (little difference between them these days) and perhaps it takes away from the comedy. Some different personalities might mix it up.

I'd also add that Have I got News For You has survived for so long as a current affairs satire, because the regulars (or at least Hislop) actually knows his stuff. Perhaps MTW should take note. Despite all the posturing from the likes of the little dwarf Howard and Hugh Dennis, they don't know as much as they think they do to make it funny. Fair enough, it's not meant to be exactly rhe same as HIGNFY, but it would give them a broader range in which to take the piss. At the moment it's pretty painful to watch them cracking poor jokes to try and divert attention from knowing little about the subject matter

I've realised that the women who I tend to find the most funny are lesbians. Perhaps it's because they don't fit into the usual box of most straight women who come out with a set of "My boyfriend is crap for the following reasons which will take 10 minutes to telly you", and which generally includes a failure to help her achieve an orgasm.

I disagree RE Frankie, yes he was funny to start with, but i do feel that towarRAB the end he ended up just forcing himself to be controvesial but saying them just for shock value instead of them actually being funny. I do like him as a comedian, but his live DVD was poor due to the fact that nearly all his material had been used on MTW, so i feel it was probably the right time for him to move on. Hopefully this series will find another great new talent, as it was the show which made Andy, Russell and Frankie become household names.

That was a really good episode last night, mainly because everyone contributed and no-one took over. There wasn't a spell of poor jokes and everything fitted in perfectly. All the guests worked well.

And you had to feel for Dara :D

I thought he had, wasn't sure if Mitchell had caught up with him.

I kinda hope Milton doesn't become a permanent pannellist, alot of people I know like him but only in small doses :)
If I had my way; Byrne would become a permanent, in place of Franke, with Dennis, Parsons and Howard, and 2 guests. :D

It's not just edgy comedians though. Harry & Paul have a satirical sketch about old members club fogies calling people queers (or quares). Are those unduly comments about Ian Hislop and David Cameron?

Well not really, take the Frankie Boyle/Rebecca Adlington thing. They were discussing her and her sport, taking the piss out of her sport, I cant remember, then as a rather cheap punch line, mainly playing up to his already rather forced at times shock role, Frankie Boyle comments on how she looks. That isn't comedy, it isn't cutting edge comedy it is a cheap laugh, surely professional comedians should be above that kind of punchline don't you think? Would that section have suffered if Frankie Boyle hadn't criticised her looks? To be honest it was more about Frankie Boyle having the last word and just to say something shocking than it was actual comedy.

We might as well stick my 15 year old sulky cousin on there if taking the piss out how how someone looks passes of a edgy comedy, he would make a killing, he would however be crap at any actual well thought out jokes and observations.:D

I think some are confusing this 'unduly' word to mean nothing can be said at all, it doesn't mean that.

The line up section on Buzzcocks is made up from 'rent an extra' and the odd Buzzcock staff member, they all know what the round can sometimes involve, they are pre warned, they are hired solely on how they look, they have given their consent by appearing, it is what they are there for and they are paid the extras fee for it. It is very different than talking about, for example, Lady Ga Ga and then as a cheap punchline saying something derogatory about her. So saying she might have penis is not unduly derogatory as it is something Lady Ga Ga has played upon herself in the media, saying something about how she dresses isn't unduly derogatory.

It does not mean they can not say anything derogatory at all about her, unduly does not mean that.

You will see very little change, if at all, as a lot of the comments are made within context.

Buzzcocks, IMHO, did become extremely nasty towarRAB the end of Mark Lamarr's reign and during Simon Simon Amstell's stint. Maybe that style of presenting/panel show is on the way out anyway. It started towarRAB the last few series of 'They Think It's All Over' it was funny for a while but it is all a little tired now, everything has a shelf life I suppose.

But this 'unduly derogatory' applies to certain elements, that are far and few between, on panel shows and not comedy as a whole. It doesn't mean that The Office should not have made disabled 'gags' it also does not mean the end of edgy comedy.
:)
