Mock The Week - Series 9, BBC2 Thursdays 10pm (Merged)

Agreed, it's not as strong as it was but I still greatly enjoy it. And it couldn't have carried on the way it was going. One of the things I like about series 1 & 2 is that the producers mixed things up a lot more -- different rounRAB, different styles of humour. By series 5 it had really changed into a tight, repetitive format with comedians cut from roughly the same cloth. Which was great. But by series 7, the format was clearly becoming stale and almost a shouting match. Something did have to change. I think the real problem is that the producers are trying to continue in the mode of series 5-7 but without the same level of talent.

As for Gina/Nigeria -- you'd be hard pushed to find any non-English comic (including Irish, Scottish, Welsh) on an English show who, at some point, doesn't tediously bang on about his or her background with implicit victimhood. Yashere was great -- I used to love her "I don't fink so!" character on (was it Lenny Henry? can't remember). But after she came back from the States she seemed to have totally lost her sense of humour.

I hate how some of them are content to make a 'joke' they know isn't funny but will get a round of applause anyway, just because it's an insult to an unpopular person or a popular reference.

Addison did it a bit last episode, really a waste of time.

I enjoyed last night's show but for the first time, it struck me that the comedians almost definitely get fed some of the content of the show to work on beforehand. Not sure what it was about this particular show that made me think that, but there you go.

Jack Whitehall was in a bit of trouble over the summer wasn't he? The same guests constantly reappearing shows how MTW has run out of ideas.

What did he say about him? I presume it's a football thing but I don't watch that.

SF is good but, like Milton Jones, he just crowbars one-liners into the show. DM proved he was more than competent in a live and/or unpredictable situation with C4's Alternative Election Night when he came out on top out of all of them. Carr was good, but Brooker's stuff was almost all pre-recorded and Lauren Laverne was pointless.

Very surprised at all the hate towarRAB Chris Addison on here. He's brilliant in The Thick Of It and comes across as a very intelligent and funny stand up in my honest opinion. Ah well, each to their own!

Have to agree about the others though. And I really wish Russell Howard wasn't coming back at the end of the current series, he's about as funny as watching paint dry.

Miles Jupp... brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! A very charming and funny comedian indeed and he's also very good in Rev.

My favourite stand-up at the moment has to be Micky Flanagan though, he's a top bloke and I love his cockney witt.

On a related note, I'm just watching Ben Elton's new one-off stand up show on Dave Ja Vu. Can't fault his contributions to Blackadder but the guy comes across as a first class t*sser. He's just done some material / ranting about the people who came up with the channel name for "Dave". The audience don't appear to be laughing much, just the odd chuckle every two minutes or so and his better jokes are going over their heaRAB. Jason Byrne is on after the break, so I think I'll go and stick my head in the ground and hope that the annoying Irish insect has finished his routine when I come back...

I thought it was a fairly poor episode TBH, Russell made the same exact joke about Adebayor that he'd made the previous week , I did like Hugh's joke that Clegg was a just a lackey, and his kiRAB were calling him "Smithers" :D
I did like the England banter though :D
Micky's joke about tasting ketchup was good :)

I remember him doing that on the outtakes show. He's said in interviews before that for each round he recorRAB both outcomes and it's the editors who effectively decide the winners, depending how it enRAB up.

Sometimes, it seems like they're all out of their depth when it comes to topical news, except for Dara. The funniest segment this series so far was, IMO, the jokes about Dara's big head. Absolutely nothing to do with current events and they all ran riot.

milton jones and now jack whitehall?

this show really has gone to the pits. i see now why they dropped it back to 6 episodes per series instead of 12.

Why can't they just give you a straight answer? They are funded by the public, they should be able to answer for themselves, and a lot quicker than they did. Just one actual solid reason, not a wishy washy we need flexibility etc.
The BBC annoys me sometimes.

I just came on to mention that I'm so sick of seeing Jack Whitehall on shows I generally enjoy.

MTW has gone downhill a little since Frankie left, but I still enjoy watching it. Last night, though, when JW was doing his 'stand up' bit, I actually switched off for a bit.

I am so sick of his smug little face appearing on everything. He was on Stand up for the week, was on HIGNFY recently, 8 out of 10 cats the other week and on and on and on. He just appears everywhere.

What's with the standing side on to the microphone then bending over in that weird way so he is right at it? Everyone else can be heard standing up normally. And when he did the 'scenes we'd like to see' he would waltz up, say his cr@ppy line and then walk off as if it was the funniest thing ever, and get the 'polite' ripple of laughter.

He is awful!

If he was on the odd show I wouldn't mind. But he's on EVERYTHING lately and just ruins it.

He seems to think that by saying things in an angry voice, it makes it funnier.

He's just a **** and so even if he has a point, the fact it is coming from his lips makes me just thing, what right do you have...? rather than enjoying the joke.

More David Mitchell would be better, I agree with that. He's better on panel shows than things like Peep Show IMO and I think all the regulars have their moments and aren't too bad. I'm not keen when they put on the 'token' female guest as they are never (with one exception, but I forget her name) funny (Especially the black girl, Gina something - how many jokes about her Nigerian mum can there be?)

But, I'd still rather any of them than more JW!!!

Rant over.
:p
