"Mobile Suit Gundam 00" on Sci Fi's Ani-Monday Series Talkback (Spoilers)

I think the character designs looking feminine is because the primary designer for them was a female who'd previously done yaoi. There's certainly a 'pretty boy' air to the designs but I've personally seen worse. I mean, if you want a Gundam show where females and males just seem to mesh I'd point to Hirai's design work in Gundam SEED. Here, it seems pretty easy to tell who's who (well, except for that Tieria...thing).
 
So, as someone who didn't catch any of this series' run, can someone please tell me if they are they going to re-air it at anytime? Online streaming? I've been looking for a new anime to watch, and this one should do.

After I missed the first episodes, I didn't want to just start watching at a random point.
 
There are definitely some Wing influences present. I'm pretty confident that 00 wouldn't exist as it does if Wing had never been made. For one obvious thing, you've got a team of hanRABome Gundam pilots up against the world. However I feel there are also differences to be found, be it in terms of setting or plot or ideology. This will be much easier to talk about later.

I will say this much though, 00 starts off moving the ball further down the field. It's stated up front in the very first episode that Celestial Being's existence is a contradiction, and I think it should be noted in 00 the Gundams represent something very different. Early on in Wing the Gundams are acting out revenge, undertaking a small but poweful rebellion against a specific group that was manipulating events to its benefit. If the Wing Gundams were anything, they were anti-tyranny. That was a constant from start to finish, before the word pacifism was ever uttered. That was an ideology that the Wing boys discovered as the world changed around them.

In 00, the Gundams are not really attacking any specific Government or even an ideology. They are basically declaring war on the entire global order. They are using overwhelming force to demonstrate to the world that the old way of doing things will no longer work. They are not pushing any particular point of view, nor are they appealing to anybody's better nature. It's a straightforward effort to make the risks and costs of war far outweigh the gains. It's a very simple message: act with aggression, and you will be punished. Celestial Being is like a couple of parents inflicting corporal punishment upon their children, counting on the expectation that the pain from this punishment will be a learning experience.

The goal is not to transcend war--completely unlike Wing. The goal is to eliminate war by making it a completely untenable activity. At that point, humanity is left with no other option but to change.

One would now reasonably ask: change how, and into what? And that is the real question, isn't it......

Addendum: One might also ask how I would exactly describe the Gundams of this show, then. In simple terms? Benevolent tyrants.

No really Setsuna. It's not like you can join with your Gundam. This isn't Digimon Frontier.
