Mobile Insurance Question?
Can people commit fraud by saying they've lost/had their phone stolen and then end up getting a brand new one, and having two, then selling them? I say this because a friend of mine just bought an iPhone off somebody, he already had a brand new Samsung Tocco with insurance, that he swapped for the iPhone, he is now going to claim for the Tocco on the insurance as lost or stolen.. Obviously it is none of my business, and plenty of people do it.. Is it that bad? Opinions please! Thanks guys.
 
It's fraud and you could get into a lot of trouble if caught. The thing with selling phones that have been claimed as stolen, they have a serial number on them and when a person goes to activate that phone, that's when they get caught.
 
More than likely he could. Problem is, most handset protection companies only allow you to make a certain amount of claims during a period of time. For example no more than two per year. So the drawback is, if he uses hi claim, and then sells the phone he has no more claim if something really does happen to the phone in the near future. Also, things like that will eventually cause the price of insurance to go up. It would also eventually cause the deduct ables to go up.

Plus, all phones have a serial number. This is how we identify one phone of a certain model from another phone of the exact same model. They have his serial number in the system. If he makes a claim, they will flag that number. If it is later found, they will know. They're also going to ask for a police report when he files the claim. If he's caught he'll also go down for defrauding the police. That's a bad on!

So tell him at his own risk, there are a lot of ways to get caught.
 
if he files a claim for lost/stolen then the phone will be flagged and cannot be activated legitimately by anyone unless the owner calls customer service stating the phone was found and then he may have to return the replacement or pay a penalty. if he stated the device was damaged, he will have to send the damaged phone back or pay a penalty. yes, this is bad and too time consuming to bother with. also if he gets caught, fraudulent claims will be prosecuted by the law. it is sooooo not worth it.
