I have a 1981 yamaha virago XV750 and mixed the positive and the negative wile trying to jump it.. oops, the bike is now lifeless except the engine will turn over when I use a hammer to connect the + and - on the solenoid. Sooo I don't THINK it is the solenoid or starter. Also The bike is in neutral and with the key on the neutral light remains dim. Hope this is enough info

you wish that is not a good plan and there are some expensive parts you have probably fried. the bike is going to the shop there is nothing you are going to be able to fix unless you know the electronics of the bike and have the test equipment. That sucks, but there is a lesson here, do not cross the wires to your bike.

Just in case that happens-yamaha has placed a master fuse in there that will blow to protect the circuits. On newer bikes the fuse is located under the starter relay or solenoid. If not there look at all the fuses in the fuse box and it will be the one rated at the highest amperage.Re charge the battery before you try to start it or you could end up with a flooded motor and other related problems.

as said you've probably screwed up a wee bit. Red goes to red + and black goes to black - Without you have some test equipment you'll be unable to resolve the problem, even if you strip parts off you will not be able to test them. Ask around your local m/c clubs or search for the owners club site there may be some one who can lend a hand. Bear in mind this could be expensive!
