I really would love to join the US Military. It is my biggest desire to give back to my country. The only thing that is stopping me is my prior mental health records, hear me out and let me explain. My mom was bipolar skitzoeffective, growing up with her she projected a lot of her mental illness onto me. When I was two years old she asked my pediatrician for a referral to a psychiatrist, the doctor did not advise it. My mom asked for it. Anyways, so when I was between the ages of 9 and 11 years old I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, oppositional defiance disorder, and intermittent explosive disorder. I've been hospitalized for anger outbursts, suicidal tendencies, and just a whole bunch of other crazy things. Okay lets jump into more current times, when I was sixteen my mom kicked me out and I decide not to come back after that.I have been off medication and accomplished the following;I have held down a job for almost two years in costumer service. I've obtained my GED and I've also obtained a valid drivers licenses. I have not seen my psychiatrist since May of 2008, or been on psych meds since May of 2008. My best friends family whom I have lived with for the past year and a half do not think I am bipolar, and never have. They have known me for ten years, and they do not advise me to go back to that doctor for any reason.
Point being, is it worth it to get a psychological reevaluation? Or will I still be disqualified? I am just very sad because every time I take a career test, it tells me I should work in civil services, or join the military. And all of my dream jobs require military experience.
Please only serious answers.
I am a girl, but yeah... thats what my friend who is a former marine said. She told me if they do not ask, do not tell. I just wonder if the psych eval would help...
