Minimal weight and muscle loss. Health and exercise gurus welcome!?

I've been trying to lose weight and have been successful. However, I'm now a size 10 (UK) and I still have a little weight to lose in my thighs because I have very short legs ad I always seem to look a bit stocky.
I know its hardest to lose that little bit extra and most of my leg girth is muscle. I've heard that decreasing your intake of protein decreases muscle, because I still want to go to gym.

I need to lose about 3-5 kilograms (6-9 pounds). I'm 5.6
Does anyone have any advice?

The more effective the better!
