MILITARY TROOPS?????WHAT'S A TROOP?

I watch and read alot about the military and wars. But when a sentence like this is said..."300 British troops swarmed". I don't get it. Is a single soldier refered to as a "troop" because 300 troops is 300 people isn't it? Please, one of you military men , could you please explain this to me?
Seems funny to call a person a troop.

A troop may refer to a particular unit or it may also be the plural form of trooper.

In alot of engineering, artillery, armour etc. (in the Commonwealth anyway) instead of having Platoons, Coys and Battalions.. they have Troops, Squadrons and Regiments. This gets confusing because in alot of nations a group of Infantry Battalions may be to as a Regiment.

So..

"300 British troops swarmed" could mean that 300 individual soldiers were there, or that 300 Troops or 6000+ soldiers went there.

Make sense?

Yes, the word 'Troop' refers to one soldier. So the word 'Troops' means many soldiers. So yes, "300 British troops" means "300 British Soldiers"
