military ranks information?

for the first several (4-5) ranks, you are promoted based on how long you've been in.
After that, you earn them by being very talented or loyal and hardworking.

But they will be slow and spread out, so don't expect to be a Sergeant after 2 years or something like that.

There isn't really testing per se in the Marine Corps... we just have to complete various MCI's (which are kind of like online college courses, which is finished with a test that is proctored online), and we have different schools we have to go to for certain ranks. We get to E-3 based on time in grade alone, then from there your are put up against other Marines, and Ideally only the best get promoted to Corporal and become and NCO (Non-commissioned officer). But remember you have to do the leading Junior Marines MCI now to be eligible.

Being promoted is merit based. So the better you do in the aspects that they are looking for the more likely you are to get promoted. Also if you are on good terms with your CO then he will put in a good word for you. The higher rank you are the harder it is to get promoted you have to think of it like a pyramid as you get higher the pyramid gets smaller.
