What color lanyards do US Army personnel wear: the color of their branch or the color of the type of unit they are in?
 
The only cords (lanyards) worn are by the Infantry they are sky blue. Generals Aids also are authorized a gold cord. A long time ago you wore the color of your branch, when they stopped the Infantry kept doing it.

Blue - Infantry
Gold - Cavalry
Gold/Green - Armor
Red - Artillery
White - Engineers
etc
