Hey all,

I had a G1 when it first came out, one of the first pre-orders!

I really hated it after a while as it had many bugs and I despised the kwyboard coming from a BB...I even had a little Qsearch app for a VK which is now obsolete

Anyway, I see so many updates and the OS has gone so far in so little time IMO.. I'm considering ditching my BB again and trying out the latest builds...

The only thing that scares me is the fact that older hardware won't work with newer features. For example the G1 and other phones can't take anything more than OS 1.5.

Will this still be the case? I'm considering the Evo 4g btw...
 
that's not true. the g1 is officially on 1.6. thanks to developers, though, it's running 2.1 very stably and has the capability of running 2.2 (the latest version).

if you're planning on getting the evo, i say go for it. android has grown exponentially since 1.0. the evo is running sense, so updates may be somewhat slow, but that can easily be solved by rooting.
 
You hated the g1 keyboard because you think it came from a bb? The g1 keyboard is way better than any bb so don't insult the g1. The evo is imo the best android phone to date along with the galaxy s line so I say go for it

I didn't insult anything. Maybe I wasn't clear. I hated the G1 keyboard because I previously had a BB and was too used to it. I thought the G1 keyboard was terribly, but that is personal opinion, not hate. I'm glad you like the g1 keyboard and think it's better than the BB, I just don't agree. We'll see how I feel about a phone with solely a virtual keyboard - the best selling point is how much more screen real estate it provides.

I still have a little more in my contract with T-mob so I might either stick it out or look into the Nexus one.

I came from BB 8320 to the G1(preordered), so I can relate, Its just the learning curve you have to get over. I don't think the G1 keyboard was bad, just totally different from the BB I had been using for years. No way would you be comfortable with it right away. But I ended up loving it and Android.

The Android OS has come along way. So has the hardware. But the learning curve, coming from a BB, is still huge. Not because its difficult to learn, its just a different world from BB, and will take time. Too many BB owners give up on Android too quick without taking time to learn and find solutions for features they think are missing.

Good luck with your next device. The EVO or the Nexus. You cant go wrong either way. And as old as the G1 is, in the hands of the right person, there's not a BB on the market that can match it.
 
If you want a T-Mobile phone the Vibrant is one of the best phones out there now. My friend has an EVO and it is a gigantic phone, not that I don't like, I do. As for myself I would never consider going with Sprint, AT&T or Verizon. All the carriers have got a data cap now with the exception of T-Mobile.
 
I don't think that Verizon started the cap yet. And in all honesty 2 gigs is a lot. I'm on my phone constantly and use YouTube all the time and never go over a gig. Does anybody else?

Correction, I went from my G1 to the EVO with Sprint's 'Everything Data Plan'. So there is no cap on that. You are right about the capped data plans, and that's only if you're using the mobile broadband connection plan for netbooks, notebooks, and wireless desktop use.
 
oh, for some reason, i didn't notice your concern for hardware keyboards. since you still have some time on your tmo contract, wait it out and try out the samsung epic. since you brought up the evo, it seems like you're okay with switching to sprint. the epic is the galaxy s (so it has top-notch specs), and it has a keyboard. a good 5-row keyboard if i remember correctly.
 
Yup. A dedicated row for numbers. Its gonna be awesome. Best slider with android hands down. I'm trying to wait it out for HTC to release something even better. But I'm about to give in for the evolution or sgs

You're right about older hardware not taking newer versions of Android. They say mobile phone technology is improving at a rate around 3x faster than PCs. The G1 is nearly 2 years old now. Would you put Windows 7 on a 6 year old PC? Would you expect it to be fast or even work at all?

The fact is, new hardware comes out and Google wants Android to take advantage of it, and why not?
 
Thanks for all the comments. The company I work with gives me discounts with all the carriers, T-mobile being the least amount off, but as it works out T-mob is also the cheapest ATM....

I will play with multiple phones in the meantime and figure out what I want. The galaxy with the physical keyboard sounds great although I'm not 100% set on that I need it, as long as I get used to the virtual keyboard I will be fine...

One of my main gripes with the android is I needed both hands for quick things(search/txt) I use it alot at work at my desk so i like to just pick it up with one hand.. Simple things but these things annoyed me...
 
haha extorian, i'm actually running win7 on my 5.5 year old laptop. it's not actually too bad.. it's bearable. only big complaint is the lack of aero.. which is pretty gay. my mom got a laptop like a month after me and didn't get screwed over with an intel 915 gpu, and actually has aero.
