Microwave in college dorm - am I safe?

I'm living in a college dorm, and there is a microwave about 2 feet to the right of my desk, where I spend a majority of my time when I'm not out. We use the microwave on occasion, maybe once or twice a day tops, and I'm usually at my desk when it's in use.

I don't think it's anything to be worried about, but I'm going to be in this dorm for a long time from now, and I wasn't sure if there may be some long-term health risks involved from being so close to a microwave while it is seldom used but over a long period of time.

I'm very paranoid about developing cancer or anything related, as there have been some major issues (particularly on my mother's side) dealing with it, and I've seen how it can just about come from no where. I don't want to do anything to increase my risks.

Please let me know if I'm safe (there really is no where else we can put the microwave).

Thanks

I'm not a specialist or something but I think it is ok if your microwave is beside you all the time as long as you are not very near the microwave for a long time when it is used

I can understand your concern. But you are probably under more danger from something falling off of your bed and hitting you in the head than from the microwave. As long as your microwave isn't cracked or damaged, they are safe. There would have been alot of college student who would have been extremely ill otherwise-my two sons included!

IF it makes you feel better, keep your head away from it when it is being run-that is when there would be the greatest danger of getting exposed to anything....but seriously relax on this. Worry about your classes instead!

And good luck in college!

The only way a running microwave will harm you is if you have an implanted pacemaker or defibillator. Do you have either of these?

Believe it or not you get more radiation from the foods you eat and the air you breath than you would get from the microwave running.

Relax and enjoy college, although do not relax and enjoy to much, you do need to graduate.

That's good to hear! Thanks. Now I can at least do my inhumane amount of work without worry.

Thanks again, I'll study a little extra for you guys.
