Microphone just produces loud fuzzing noise?

I have a microphone plugged into my PC and when I tried to record sound through it (Using Audacity) it just produces a loud buzzing sound.
I've tried turning off the speakers, fiddling the settings and everything I can think of. Does anyone know where this feedback might be coming from?
