Hi all,

I am 24 and from London. I have suffered with back pain for a few years and just had my MRI results. The specialist was not very informative and basically said that one of my lower disc's had "broken off" and was trapping the nerve so I would need an opp.
I had a leaflet but nothing else and was in to much shock to ask any questions!
I now have to wait for a letter with a date.
I have suffered with depression for a few years and have only just settled back into work life - now 4-6 weeks off worries me that I may become very down and withdrawn again.
The Web is confusing as it seems that a microdisectomy is just one type of surgery!

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Most likely you had a disc herniation that is now impinging on the nerve. There are a variety of surgical methoRAB to relieve this. Microdiscectomy removes only the portion of the disc that is on the nerve. I think there are different methodologies for microdiscectomy as well. There are other different procedures as well such as total discectomy, fusion if needed, laminectomy, laminotomy, etc....

You should contact the physician and ask them to provide you the full formal medical diagnosis, exact surgical procedure being proposed, and the exact levels of the spine they will be working on. This can aid your research and also help us help you if you have any questions.

If you are experiencing pain from this disc problem it's likely the surgery can help. Many people with a disc problem experience nerve pain that radiates down into the buttock and or the legs (one or both). I have an L3 disc problem and I feel that on the back of my right leg, not down the center of the leg but on the left and right sides of the back of my leg.

I've had a variety of spine surgeries and have always come out better than I went in. I always tried to look at the time away from work as time to rest, refocus, recover and then jump back into life.

Hazel,
Get a copy of your MRI report and post the results. Others here on the board with experience can describe what all the technical worRAB mean so you can understand them. Include your symtoms with your post. I have an L4/5 herniation with severe compression of various nerves that cause pain in low back, butt and down legs. I am having the microdiscectomy surgery on Jan 14. Get busy arming yourself with information on your injury. There is alot of information out there and others (here) have had a similiar experience as yours. Ask questions!!! Research!!! You need to be your own advocate when it comes to speaking to the doctors. Write down question before your appointment and ask every one of them. I found a good description of the minimally invasive microdiscectomy surgery online at spine universe. Go take a look. I know it is scary but the more informed you get along with support from others (frienRAB and family) can make a huge difference. Get to work and good luck!!!
