Microbes are being used in bioremediation of the environment. Genetic engineering has allowed for manipulation of these organisms to accomplish the tasks of remediating the environment. What is actually being manipulated in these organisms?

I disagree with the question, but the answer your teacher wants is:

The genetic content of the microbes to be used. The microbes to be used in bioremediation must ideally be able to produce lots of different enzymes (and other chemical stuff) to deal with the kind of pollutant they're supposed to be helping to break down. The scientists have several methods for adding the genes for these enzymes (and stuff) to the desired microbes.
