Mickey Rourke Was Robbed!

lol touche', but Jack Nicholson is a relevant comparison.

EDIT I know the Olivier quote you're referring to. It's a funny story. I've never been masssive on Dustin Hoffman, though. He's all effort and little natural charisma.

Look at it another way. Sean Penn might not look like a wrestler but would he give a convincing performance if he was cast as one? I reckon he would. Mickey Rourke may not look like a gay rights activist, but would he give a convincing performance if he was cast as one? I reckon not.

I thought Mickey Rourke was a shoe in to win the Oscar for best actor. Although Sean Penn gave a worthy performance in Milk, Mickey Rourke gave the best performance of his career in The Wrestler and he may not get another chance to win an Oscar, it was his time to shine. Sean Penn has won an Oscar before and will have more chances to do so in the near future but this year belonged to Mickey Rourke - voters for the BAFTA's and Golden Globe agreed but the Academy had other ideas.

Says who? Here's a look at the awarRAB won by Penn & Rourke respectively this awarRAB season before the Oscars.

Penn:
Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Actor (tied with Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler)
Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Actor
Los Angeles Film Critics Award for Best Actor
New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor
Palm Springs International Film Festival Award for Best Actor
Phoenix Film Critics Society Award for Best Actor
San Francisco Film Critics Best Actor (tied with Mickey Rourke)
Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Southeastern Film Critics Award for Best Actor

Rourke:
Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Actor (tied with Sean Penn for Milk)
Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Best Actor
San Francisco Film Critics Best Actor (tied with Sean Penn)
San Diego Film Critics Society Best Actor
Toronto Film Critics Association Best Actor
Chicago Film Critics Association Best Actor
Florida Film Critics Circle Best Actor
Detroit Film Critics Society Best Actor
Golden Globe Award Best Actor - Drama
Independent Spirit Award Best Male Lead
BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role

The bolded ones are the ones considered more "important"/prestigious.

Overall Mickey has one or two more of the smaller critics societies on his side, but Penn is backed by the bigger, more prestigious ones. Mickey had a stronger backing to win from the public (which may have seeped into certain voters' hearts) because of his "comeback" storyline - and his charisma.

Its too late to change it now. Even at work today people disagree. Everyone thinks Sean Penn is a joke. The whole show was just cringeworthy. Just Hollywood patting itself on the back ticking all the right boxes. Ok i favoured Mickey Rourke and what i said was only what several actors said about him, that they were surprised he took the role due to the kind of things hes said about gay people.

But at the end of the day i know im in the minority here and it doesnt matter because ive yet to meet or talk to anyone who thought the Oscars was any good last night. I think over the weeks youll see just how many people think the same as me and especially concerning the best actor oscar. Out of all those performances its a complete joke for him to have won that.

Didn't Penn rob Bill Murray in 2003/2004. Bill most certainly deserved one for "Lost in Translation". Can anyone actually remember the film Penn did win the Oscar that year for? I had to look it up.

Maybe Rourke and Murray can start a club. That being said Penn is an excellent actor and once I see the films will decide then.

Not seen either films yet, went to see Frost/Nixon last night and Langella was amazing, will get to see Rourke next week, and unsure when Milk is showing in our local cinema, but will go see.

Since you seem to know Sean Penn personally - enough at least to make such judgements about his personality & motivations - maybe you should bitch him out in person, instead of on an Internet forum. I'm sure he'd appreciate the honesty.

I'm not even going to bother with the eye-roll smilie.

My goodness - get over yourself, Mr. Enlightened. There's been a huge contingent of people supporting Sean Penn all the way through awarRAB season. However, they became a small vocal minority towarRAB the end since Sean Penn didn't really "campaign" to win the Oscar the way Mickey Rourke did - turning up on awarRAB shows & giving interviews left, right and centre & earning himself a following with the public.

And what? You do know him personally, enough to say that he isnt like that?!

And if you wanna supply a plane ticket, set up a meeting with him via his agent, post me the ticket and details of the meeting you've managed to set up, then I;d be more than happy to 'bitch him out in person'....but in the meantime I'll say what I like on an internet forum!

Heres a eye-roll smilie JUST for you, love ""

;)

I wanted Mickey Rourke to win it too. Sean Penn was very good though, I'm not saying he didn't deserve it, but to me MR was brilliant.

I saw both Milk and the Wrestler and personally I preferred Rourke.

Now I actually dont particularly like Micky Rourke as a person but I found myself totally drawn in by his performance... I found the film very realistic, authentic and poignant. Rourke really inhabited the character (even if it was a version on himself).

MIlk I found to be a bit disappointing..... I know the story of Harvey Milk as I read a brilliant biog of him a couple of years ago and I had high hopes... I really wanted to like the film but I found it a bit flat and I couldnt get into it, much as I wanted to. I thought Penn was very good, but he didnt blow me away...

I also thought Langella was FANTASTIC in Frost/Nixon but I didnt think he stood a chance in hell..

Brad PItt gave a pretty meh performance in Benjamin Button..... no idea why he got nominated tbh... I liked the film but nothing about BraRAB performance stood out IMO..

Didnt see the 5th guy..

Hardly ... my cinema has only one screen and tenRAB to get films only 4-6 weeks after theatrical release. When I'm not at University I have to travel 25 miles to the nearest multiplex.

This thread is like something out of the imdb forums. Slagging people off without a scrap of justification isn't big and it's not clever... but it's fun for the person doing the slagging.

Unfortunately it's really boring for everyone else.

I feel that Rourke deserved it more than Penn, for sure.

Penn was fine in Milk, but not exactly Oscarworthy, he is a decent actor and was good as Harvey Milk but I dont think the performance was anything special - whereas Rourke was just outstanding I thought.
