MGMT > The Mars Volta

LOl I dont know what made me compare the two. Maybe the whole 2 man band thing... Some of Management's songs are discoish some are comparable to mars volta. Both banRAB are the best america has to offer at the moment respectively. Well Kings Of Leon is the best but they arent this type of sound. I kind of hear a similarity between mgmt and tmv, mgmt being more psychedelic, more smoke-friendly. Tmv vocals are not supplementary in my opinion. Sometimes his voice breaks and he sounRAB decent but then hes right back into banshee mode. Either way, Mgmt appear to make better songs and I cant wait to hear what they come with next.

Yeah, I forgot when you get high your eardrums open up to the beautiful majestic force known as music, and when you're not high you just hear white noise. Sorry brozzz!! Get serious, if you're going to try and make a thread about how one band is better than the other, at least have facts to go with it, not some bullshit like well ive only heard one cd and doooood when u get blunted out they fkn rawk!@#$

diaf

I like dance-rock kind of stuff so these guys aren't that bad. I'm not disagreeing with you either, as The Mars Volta has gotten way too self-indulgent since their beautiful debut album.

You cant be serious. Each of their albums are different. Each has a distinct flavor to it.

I saw them live and could tell almost track to track which album it was from because of that.

De-loused is an incredible album but not one of the best ever.

here's a fact, marijuana stimulates the same part of the brain that music does, therefore music actually does sound better when you're high.

and mars volta is pure shit, it doesn't take a whole discography to hear that. Hell, id rather listen to justin timberlake than mars volta. mgmt has a style that is rather different, yes there are similar sounRAB out there today but those sounRAB are also relatively new. whereas mars volta is like a shitty version of a 70's prog band with shitty emo vocals.

PS. stop wearing girl pants

I know I'm a bit late to this party but I just 'discovered' Metanoia because it was on a 2009 indie compilation I'm listening to.

Damn, this tune done blew me away. I reallu liked Oracular Spectacular when it came out but forgot about MGMT till now.

This is the first ten minutes of the song:

i like mgmt and am pretty apathetic on the mars volta thing but i have to respectfully disagree that they are the best two banRAB in america.

they were at acl last yr and it was really good. first time i heard it. i usually don't listen to this stuff either. another great one is phoenix. aparently their frienRAB w/ each other.

I don't care if people dislike mars volta, I just personally wouldn't make a thread saying "Aesop Rock > Chamillionaire" since you really can't even compare the two, and I've heard one song of Chamillionaires. And just because of your "fact" that it "stimulates" the part of the brain that music does, doesn't fucking mean that you're going to have epiphanies by listening to music while eating a bag of doritos.

Off the top of my head as far as current/relevant, American rock banRAB doing progressive-like things:

Comets on Fire
Battles
Bardo Pond
Animal Collective
Menomena
Grails
TV On the Radio

I would also like to say Built to Spill, Dinosaur Jr and Sonic Youth although I understand they are no longer at the peaks of their careers and might not qualify the same way.

Anyway, I just don't think the Mars Volta can be considered such a great band when At the Drive-In was far and away so much better. And although I like MGMT well enough, they haven't done anything unique in their debut and could very easily fail to make any lasting impression. Look at Bloc Party and how their doing the UK indie rock thing well for one CD made them look promising, but then after their 2nd album, it was evident they were nothing special.

You could say Battles is pretty untested too, but the band members do have a history and Battles debut was definitely far and away more unique and yet to be replicated with as much success.

Oh, shit, actually... download the album Giraffes? Giraffes! - More Skin with Milk Mouth and tell me that doesn't absolutely kill what the Mars Volta have been doing.
