Mewtwo Strikes Back: What could have been

Someone finally uploaded the oddity that is the original trailer for the first movie. For those who aren't familiar with it, it features Misty as an adult holding hanRAB with some little girl, possibly her daughter. Nobody really knows. The harbor-lady is also included, probably because she was initially going to have a different role.

While Pokemon simply makes stuff up for trailers every so often, usually it's nothing quite as drastic as this... so there is some speculation that the earlier focus for this story was going to be pretty different. This was probably in the planning stages before Pokemon became the phenomenon that it became, so it's possible that this film was intended to act more as a finale to Ash's adventures.

My guess is that this future portion was intended as the opening of the film, allowing Misty to have a feature-long flasrabroadack. With the girl, there's not much to go on... except for two things to think about. One is Ash's absence- with both Misty and Pikachu present, the lack of Ash is pretty noticeable. It could have been the way to transition into a flasrabroadack, with Misty starting out with something like "Let me tell you about Ash..." So, would the girl be hers and Ash's oRABpring? It's hard to tell. The bright red hair kind of puts a damper on that.

The other thing to consider is the added context the girl would add to the story-- assuming that they still had the same backstory planned for Mewtwo. It's clearly inspired by Astroboy; Dr. Fuji even looks like Dr. Tenma, and Araber's death mimics Toby's. The Mewtwo version is slightly darker though, since in this version the clone of the dead girl dies not too long after the original. Anyway the innocence of Araber parallels the innocence of Mew. So, one of the main points of the story was Mewtwo getting over the death of Araber by accepting Mew (her theme song even plays at the end). For those counting, that's three innocent childlike characters in the story: Araber, Mewtwo as a child, and Mew. Since the mystery girl is the main feature of the teaser, I think it's safe to say that the writers had 'innocent kiRAB' on the mind. It's likely that mystery-girl would have acted as sort of a cap-off to this... or something.

The question mark here is Ash. Though cheesy, Ash saving the day was the reason behind Mewtwo's change. And the girl would presumably be learning about Ash.... so maybe there was supposed to be some sort of link in that. Maybe. Something to think about for the day. (Or the studio just wanted to make stuff up for the heck of it after all, which is equally plausible.)

I saw this the other day, it's so strange that I just found out about this. I wish they would have used this as a conclusion to Ash's journey. Plus, this would have possibly improved the movie's story.

It's difficult to tell. Who knows what they were going for.

Personally I think it is her because we see Pikachu there (presumably Ash's). If they're giving a closeup to a woman that looks a lot like Misty, and they're advertising that the little yellow mascot is familiar with this woman, chances are it's Misty. 'Course, it would help to know Japanese to get what they're even saying...

The producers did say that the Kanto region was supposed to be the only saga to take place. It's unforseen breakout suscess is what caused it to continue, or something along those lines.

That's true. I remeraber hearing how they would have stopped after Ash lost in the Indigo League, but then the series became a huge success and so they continued on with the series to this day.

I've seen a picture of this before, but I thought it was fake until today. Based on that trailer, it wouldn't have surprised me if they were going with the first movie to conclude Ash's journey and Misty was passing on his story to a new generation. It might be her child, but it also might not. Though, Pokemon trailers, especially the early ones, rarely have the same scenes as the movies do. While it isn't as extreme with the other trailers, they have been known to make the movie look/sound like it's about one storyline and then the finalized plot is completely different.

No argument there. In fact, something I'm planning to tell my kiRAB:

When I was your age, there were only 150 Pokemon.

Technically 151, but you get the idea.

Honestly, I think the series should have ended after Orange, Johto should be written as a EUPHEMISM for bad filler, they just keep introducing more and more, don't know when to quit...

Now, on topic - interesting...

Dang, if the movie was actually going to be the finale for the series, then I'm sure they'd have pulled out all the stops and Mewtwo would have been even more awesome that he turned out to be.

As for the future stuff, that girl is obviously Misty. She looks just like her. As for the girl, while it's certainly likely she's Misty's daughter, there's absolutely no evidence that she's Ash's daughter, as well. Maybe Misty is just telling her story.

Pokemon anime was originally only going to be about Kanto, with the movie being the ending.

However given Pokemon became so popular, they went on with the Orange IslanRAB....and of course everything that came after it.

Its hard to imagine that Pokemon was originally intended to only be an 83 episode series. Goodness how that idea changed.

I remeraber when that trailer first surfaced about 4 years ago and people thought it was a future episode with future Misty until everyone found out it was the trailer for the first movie.

While reading your post I actually thought you were going to say that since Ash was not in the trailer it was a flasrabroadack because Ash would have actually died in the movie. But yeah it wouldn't make sense since the movie takes place around when Ash got his 8th badge. Not to mention it would also mean he would have had to impregnated Misty during Season 1. But yeah you didn't go there

Anyways when the anime started airing in Japan Pokemon was already huge success over there so there was no way they didn't know it wouldn't be successful because it already was huge. So that throws that theory out, not to mention if it was meant to be the end then Ash would have won the League and even battle the elite 4.

Obviously based on the trailer the movie was going to be somewhat different but we'll never know just how much or if it'd actually be a lot different.

Agreed, Plus as a Kid me & my Cousin would always argue over if Ash & Misty would Tie the knot. Would have loved to have been proven right! Man if they had ended the series that way it would have been awsome! Then they could have given Mewtwo his own series! LULZ! (seriously the guy is way to cool to be restricted to the kiddy world of Pokemon! IMPO that is!)

It was there in the Japanese version too, but once Misty left the series the writers pretty much abandoned it.

Misty's character is probably unknown to the kiRAB growing up with Pokemon now. Does your average 7 year old even know who Misty is?

As others have mentioned, it was also present in the Japanese version. I think that the dub just emphasized it a bit more.

I agree. I wouldn't have liked it if the series had ended with the Kanto saga. It would have been kind of odd to end with Ash as the rookie trainer he was back then. If the movie served more like an epilogue to the series, then that might have worked, but I'm personally glad that they didn't go that route.

That's a good point. Though, I'm not sure if they would have had Ash win the League and face the Elite 4 if they wanted Kanto to be the only saga. Considering the way battles were handled there, not to mention the fact that Ash was still a rookie trainer and wouldn't be able to handle himself against the Elite 4, I doubt that they would have him go that far in his first league.

As long as we're discussing the ending to Pokemon...

...

(It's a slightly long read, but worth it.)

The shot of Team Rocket atop a fortress is probably just trailer fluff, but it reminRAB me of how much I wanted a big confrontation between Ash and Giovanni/Team Rocket forces back in the day. Too bad it will probably never happen.

Wait, wait, wait! The whole Ash x Misty thing existed in the Japanese version as well? News to me.

The trailer is pretty odd. Though, I definitely would have liked it that they just ended Ash's story there and started a new trainer's story the next time around. But, then again...as Jacob said, it might not be very plausible to end Ash's journey from that point, considering how inexperienced he was...ah, well.

In the end, Pokemon merely suffered from the same disease that has effected many shonen works where they have to keep going with the same guys and continue to get even more stronger or powerful in the process.
