Metallica

All this Metallica talk really has me wanting to listen to the early stuff right through to the Load and Reload stuff... kinda curious after all this discussion to see how all this musial progression sounRAB...

I'm neither bothered by the Napster stuff (it's way beyond time to get over it) nor the perceived quality of their music... I actually enjoy St. Anger and Death Magnetic immensely, although I am by no means a hardcore fan... I honestly think they are a bit unfairly knocked around by fans and their perceptions/ideas.

I don't disagree with many things you say here at all. I was just stating that he won't be replaced. A couple of side projects would be interesting for sure.

I don't know load/reload that well, but I would definetly say that Black Album is a heavy metal album. Hard rock it ain't, that's for sure.

I didnt claim Lars Ulrich was a **** rather just that it is a fairly popular opinion although I must admit I do share that opinion. Theres always ego's in music but Lars' is huge and he just doesnt quite back his up I think. Its been debated on here before whether he's a bad drummer or just has an unusual technique but either way he's just a little too arrogant and ****y for my liking. On the other hand he has contributed a lot to what Metallica are and have been in the past.

I never understood the backlash to the Napster lawsuit either. I've made my opinion fairly clear on this site before when it comes to that at the expense of Adidass and what I didnt realise at the time was a 4 year old rant :bonkhead:. It was a fairly hotheaded response in retrospect but the footage of all of those Metallica "fans" burning albums because of it? Thats just pathetic, plus it really doesnt make any sense because in essence all they were doing were burning money from their own pocket that is now in the pockets of the band they were protesting against. They really showed them!

1. Well for me Reign in Blood is the king of early thrash albums with Exodus`s Bonded by Blood a close second and early Metallica and Megadeth as well. When it comes to thrash and groove metal Slayer, Sepultura and Pantera are really it for me, even though I do have a very soft spot for Megadeth.

2. Without doubt Cliff Burton was one of the best bass players of his generation and I don`t think that Metallica ever replaced him, I was never a fan really of John Newstead.

3. Well you know far more about both ACDC and Motorhead than I do, so I`ll bow to your better judgement there, as my knowledge is based on just several albums between them. As for Orgasmatron, well I love Sepultura`s version of the song.

Yeah him being replaced is just a "what if" i have always thought about. I could see James putting out some bluesy music. I would like to see what he could do if he had total control over the music. Not sure what Hammett would do.

Well I'm disagreeing with you but only to a very small extent. I've re-read my posts and I really should not have been using worRAB like 'great' to describe some of their lyrics as thats not what I meant. Thats my bad.

A lot if not most of Metallica's lyrics are average to poor (and theres some shockers!) and also a lot of the lyrics I like are probably then let down by poor verses or poor chorus', ie if you were to sit and read the lyrics through from start to end rather than pick off a few lines here and there or single verses etc then I would imagine they wouldnt read very well at all.

So, I wouldnt describe all of Metallica's lyrics as skippable, if you see where I was coming from. Theres plenty of banRAB out there who cant put any lyrics together at all.

I always liked Fade To Black's lyrics though. That ones an exception to the Metallica rule.

Most of the time, anybody can win or be nominated at the grammy awarRAB. Perfect example-Audioslave with three nominations!!!

I guess if you listen to their Garage Inc. album you can hear their Punk roots fairly well... I personally prefer them after they added the metal overtones came into their sound... but i am of course, more of a fan of that style of music than punk at any rate...

like JH i can only list favourites from the first 4 off the top of my head.

blitzkreig (if bonus tracks don't count then - jump in the fire)
creeping death
battery
dyer's eve

i was expressing confusion at the popular opinion you brought up rather than you personally! He is arrogant but in the context of drummers for huge heavy metal banRAB he is probably entitled, and especially for fledgling banRAB that kind of self belief can carry you further. He seemed quite reasonable in that hilarious documentary filmed around St.Anger's release (god that album sucked), I loved the bit when he sold his collection of horrible paintings on the advice of the his rock therapist. :p:
