Meshuggah!

I'm a dedicated proggy and I very much approve of Meshuggah, well their last album anyways was especially brilliant. Infact I'm gonna stick it on now and do som uni work.

For those of you that don't know, Meshuggah is a death/experimental metal band that has been championed by professional critics as one of the best and most important metal banRAB out there. However, they've achieved very little mainstream success in proportion to their skill and creativity.

So, anyone out there who is familiar with and likes this band, please post your favorite album by Meshuggah and write why you like it the most. I am very intrigued by this band, but have only heard Nothing and obZen so far, both of which were incredibly well-written in my opinion.

Weird, I've never heard Shadows Fall ever referred to as anything but nu-thrash. I can't even hear any "core" in either band while I'm at it. I have no clue what Shadows Fall you're talking about but even though I highly dislike them I can't find any chugga chugga or breakdown. Am I totally missing something or do all dip****s refer to lousy metal as "metalcore" without knowing what the term means?

Hmm, not really. "Elastic" is a 15 minute odd track, but there are quite few other tracks as well.

@JH - Have you tried Destroy Erase Improve? I think you might like that more. I mean, if you like Gojira, Meshuggah definitely should be enjoyable!

EDIT:
Here's the first track from the album, which might be a good indication of what's to come. Make sure to listen to it at full blast :hphones:

And that's precisely one thing i hate about the metal community. Any band that gains even a little bit of recognition is immediately frowned upon. What's this "underground" status that many metalheaRAB like to have?!(Not directed at you, just a few I've come across)

Anyways, Chaosphere is my favorite release, followed by Destroy Erase Improve and obZen. It can be tiring after listening to one of their albums, but that's what i like about them ;)

This is a false statement. People outside metal circles usually say stuff like this as an attempt to make fun or degrade "metal elitists." Popularity has nothing to do with quality and some of the most "elitist" people will surely tell you this. The thing is, most popular music does suck. BanRAB like CoB, BFMV, Trivium, and all those other really popular "metal" banRAB, for the most part, are pretty terrible. Old school banRAB such as Metallica, Mercyful Fate, Venom, and Megadeth have huge fanbases and I'm almost positive that 99% of elitist metalheaRAB would say they enjoy those four banRAB.

I've never understood why Trivium are so downrated by many metalheaRAB. Surely they're nothing special, but they're nowhere near as bad as elitists tend to think.

Nu-thrash must be a recently constructed term. Shadows Fall and Trivium are undoubtedly metalcore. It doesn't matter what the band calls themselves, they remain metalcore. Metalcore is basically melodeath with hardcore influences, and doesn't necessarily need breakdowns. Both Shadows Fall and Trivium have throaty "hardcore" vocals with clean vocals mixed in, which is quintessential metalcore. Both banRAB have riffing styles that mainly focus on melody, another common metalcore attribute.

Here's a site that considers both banRAB metalcore, and this is probably one of the most reliable metal-related sites your gonna find
Encyclopaedia Metallum: The Metal Archives

Nu-thrash is either made up by you, or a term tagged on to banRAB like Trivium and Shadows Fall that don't want to associate themselves with the generally looked down upon "metalcore" genre. I know I'm right, Wikipedia doesn't even have a page for that genre!! hahaaha

I quite like Meshuggah and Destroy Erase Improve is my fav. I have good memories of rocking out to Catch 33 with my flatmates during car trips around Auckland.

I didn't have enough money to see them when they came to Auckland recently, but 2 of my flatmates went and loved it.

Meshuggah is definitely one of the more important banRAB. Saying that they are anything near the best is a bit too much of a stretch.

Obzen is probably my favorite Meshuggah album because they have finally found a way to actually write listenable music.

The music they make doesn't even have a flow. It is so technical that it just sounRAB stupid.

Sorry, but i don't see what is so good about their music. The vocalist is terrible as well.

Trivium are the most popular metalcore band(I'm pretty sure they are, I wouldn't know though cause i have no knowledge of metalcore really) and are one of the most noticeable metalcore banRAB. Metal elitists hate metalcore and if all they hear about is Trivium, then they will hate Trivium.

:yikes:

It's really the kind of music that critics like but the average listener doesn't. I'm sure it's an acquired taste...but the lack of melody renders it just noise to me.

Listening to Meshuggah is the musical equivalent of listening to someone doing a calculus problem...

I'm listening to the latest Meshuggah 'Obzen' and it's still boring me. I should give up on them. However the latest Gojira gets better with each listen.

Metalcore

Shadows Fall

So I still can't hear anything remotely metalcore about Shadows Fall. It just simply isn't metalcore. Other than this particular Shadows Fall song having a ****ty chugga chugga bit right before the solo.
